Ancient Inferno: A Short Story

Haggard and exhausted, I conceded my journey, leaving my associate to go on ahead. Upwards, the sky was a bright blue without a cloud in the sky, not reflecting my mood even slightly. The arid heat was beating down on me, so I was glad to take shelter beneath the shade of the two precipices, which towered over me like especially giant giants. Everything else is rather unremarkable, with no particular smell, the taste of sizzling decay, and the only sounds to keep me company are my slow, heavy breaths. However, under further examination, I was rendered disappointed. What had originally seemed to be impressive and colossal, was anaemic and small... I feel as though I am about to die of dehydration, or spontaneously combust, (While I am exaggerating, I should have seriously considered bringing ice - a lot of ice) and yet comparing this heat to that ancient inferno is identical to comparing a sea to an ocean. Simply put, There is an immeasurable difference between the two that perhaps is incomprehensible. Unfortunately, the flare forced every drop of precious water to evaporate, and thus life decayed soon after. Not too long after, the plateau was cleaved into two symmetrical parts of one whole by a single slash of the wind's blade like it tore through paper. The wind is a fickle creature, perhaps to the point of being bipolar, showing up seemingly at random. Sometimes it does well; sometimes it does badly. It always leaves almost immediately. All that remains is a dry desert. If the sun was not so harsh, if the wind were not so capricious in nature, If the oasis is was not so dependent on a single source of sustenance, then maybe I would be I would be peacefully strolling at a slow pace in paradise, as opposed to sitting it the blisteringly hot sun (and not be bored to the point of examining a valley for entertainment.) Maybe the situation is poetic: a vivacious, effervescent Garden of Eden dissolving in only a few hundred years because it was too prideful to have more than just water to support itself. Should I be sympathetic for the …show more content…
The sand had a fine texture, like sugar, but lacked the cool wetness exclusively found in the sand of beaches - which I find far more pleasant. As if to add salt to the wound, a bright, shining gleam bounced off the flat, tranquil sand directly into my eyes, dazzling me. As I adjusted my position to alleviate this problem, I continued to pant to sooth my scorched tongue and ease dehydration. Yet again, the weak breeze goes about its life in mysterious ways, leaving the sand untouched, as it wafts the scent of nothing (Which is very hard to describe as it is not encountered often.) and softly whistles, further accentuating

The texts Daodejing by Laozi and Inferno by Dante both provide a powerful definition and illustration of virtue, which determines the future of an individual. Under Daodejing, virtue is defined as the power intrinsic in each thing in its natural state and the force that allows humans to reach their full potential. To achieve this power, one must follow the natural way of being uncorrupted, and ultimately it will reach their goals. The Inferno talks about a number of virtues as well as sins that make a person unvirtuous. The Inferno explores various sins a person can commit and it categorizes each sin from bad to unforgivable.…

It was a little cold, but not unbearably so; candles in brass brackets lined the walls on either side to light the way. He closed is eyes, fully expecting another change of scene, yet there was nothing. The sound of his feet on the stones continued to echo down the passage.…

    2) How does Dante use material from classical mythology and classical literature? Charon, the Furies, and Virgil’s discourse on Fortune egregious examples of Dante’s cultural syncretism. Dante uses the various fantastic and hellish beasts that populate Roman, Greek, Latin, and other classical mythologies to illustrate the guardians of the afterlife that he is attempting to portray to the audience. Charon, the navigator of the River Styx, is called back to do an encore of the job he had done for Inais and bring yet another living soul into the world of the dead, though in this case it is the hellish Inferno of Dante’s Christianity dominated creation and not the Underworld of Greek and Roman lore. Further, each circle of hell Dante describes…

Throughout The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, there is a consistent recurrence of the word fire, which is interesting since most of time it is utilized metaphorically. It often emphasizes characters’ passion; however it is also used more literally to signify destruction. Passion plays a key role in the story: characters wholeheartedly take positions for their belief due to powerful emotions, but most of the time their attempts have unintentional ramifications. These decisions appear shortsighted; they do not take into consideration all the logistics, possibly because people are too eager to take action before thinking it all the way through. Such illogical thinking is seen when the commoners attack the conspirators’ homes.…
