Archimedes’ screw was like a elevator, effectively lifting water up a slope, so what happens is that the water is going up the screw diagonally, the water is lifted up by the giant screw and tries to go down but because it is diagonal it gets pushed against the side so it can’t go down, you would need to understand gravity to understand Archimedes’ screw.
