Breta Petraccia Water jar (shoulder hydria) with Athena, Herakles, Apollo, and Hermes
Water jar (shoulder hydria) with Athena, Herakles, Apollo, and Hermes is an Ceramic Ancient Greek vase that was placed at Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. The vase was colored with black slip at the negative space (back ground). The positive space where the design was divided into 3 main parts on the vase was colored with red pigment. Only one half of the vase (one side) comes with the design.
Overall, the main design was divided into 3 main areas. Top, middle and the bottom of the vase. All 3 parts contains different scene. In my opinion, the artist try to draw the eye of the audiences into the middle part of the design on the vase.

They are wearing Corinthian helmet with the shields and javelins on their hands. On the two sides of the battle, there are two female onlookers that raising their arms in a certain type of gesture.
At The middle panel describe a scene that “Athena steps into a chariot”. Facing her was a “nude Herakles” holding bow and club. Right behind the four horses, “Apollo” is holding a lyre. There is a unidentified female figure that missing the head stands right behind the horse withers. At the horse head position, “Hermes holds a caduceus”. At the bottom panel, the design describes the scene of a deer hunt with 3 warriors on the horse and one on foot hunting a stag.
In my opinion, the composition overall is to draw the audiences’ eyes into the main part of the vase where Athena steps into a chariot. At the top and bottom panels, we can clearly see that the artist tried to lead our eyes into the middle part of the panel by creating the two similar, symmetrical sides of the scene that leads the eyes right into the middle of the design. For example, At the top panel, if we divide the scene into half, we will have two similar symmetrical sides with the warriors wearing helmet with the shield and the javelins. The javelins with the gesture of the two warriors were pointing at the middle warrior was in a defending gesture. Besides that, the two female figures are raising their arm

I think the artist successfully used the spaces to help our travel around where the artist want the audiences to focus on. At the top and bottom panels, there are a lot of spaces between the figures that emphasize more into the movements and the meaning of the characters in the scene. In contrast, the middle panel was different in spaces compare to the two other panels. The middle panel seems contain less empty, free spaces between the figures. Especially, from the position where Apollo was standing to all the way to the very right side of the panel where Hermes standing with his head looked down. The four horses and the figures occupied the most space of this area. However, the very left side of the panel where Athena steps on the chariot and face the naked Herakles, we can obviously see that there are spaces between and around these two figures. For these reasons, our eyes got stuck around these two figure, and when we first look at the panel, our eyes will be lead right into the left part of

For this analysis, the artwork I selected a Volute Krater made in Greece during the 4th century B.C.E. The artist, The Underworld Painter, uses several lines, especially in the temple made for Atlas. The horizontal and vertical lines give the temple definite shape because of the thickness and they signify that a hero who has died, is the focal point on the back of the vase. The artist also uses curved lines at the top of the vase to show the richness of detail and drive the story further. The artist also uses the pointing hands of several figures to show a psychological point; Atlas on his throne and Selene driving her chariot.…

Just like the Relief of Princess with an Earring, the relief stele Akhenaton, Nefertiti, and Three Daughters shows the important family bond. Moreover the two relief sculptures depict Akhenaton and Nefertiti seated on either side of the composition with their daughter around them. While the daughters are being held by their parents, the sun god arises at the center of the composition. Here, just like in the Relief of Princess with an Earring, Aton is shown as a sundisk with spreading arms, this reminds of the monotheistic religion during the Amarna period . Additionally, both the Relief of Princess with an Earring and the relief stele Akhenaton, Nefertiti, and Three Daughters shown with overpowering proportions, wide hips, thin legs and stylized bodies.…

The amphora is painted more than black and red in the patterns, which gives a complicated and delicate sense of decoration. The hydria only has black and red, which endows the whole jar a sense of simplicity. Both Herakles and Theseus are famous heroes in the Greek culture that devoted to the peace and development of Athens. People at that time admired and worshiped their power, strength, and courage, which were the core values of Athenians. Therefore, it is not hard to understand why people would like to see them exclusively on the symposium so that under the effect of alcohol, they could feel themselves as strong and inspired as those heroes…

This two-handled jar displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston is a very typical Geometric Greek amphora. According to the information of the artwork on the Museum website, this ceramic vessel painted by the Birdseed Painter was made around ca. 735-720 BCE, which is in the late Geometric period, and it was found in Athens, Greece. While there is no particular subject to it, this vessel is covered by geometric patterns in most of the area, and there are two bands of repetitive animal figures painted among them. The painter used the black-figure technique to paint the jar, which was typical at the time.…

On “Hercules Delivering Prometheus” and its Frame Constraints Many artworks are confined to a frame that limits the viewers’ eye or allows for their interpretation beyond its boundaries. The audience is either forced to analyze the present material or search outside for another meaning. Lespingola’s “Hercules Delivering Prometheus” embodies an abundance of intensity and dynamism that threatens to overcome its constraints, and envelops the viewer in its power. Hence, the bronze statue breaks its figurative frame.…

The artifact fits description of a traditional female runner participating in the Heraia (the games held in honour of goddess Hera, Zeus’ wife)- “Their hair hangs down, a tunic reaches to a little above the knee, and they bare the right shoulder as far as the breast”. Evidence further suggests the statuette was originally attached to a vessel or utensil as a ‘decorative fixture’, due to a bronze rivet attached to the right foot. The origins of the statuette suggest that the Greek society incorporated women as highly active members of the community, and that women athletes were celebrated. In Greek society, decorative sculptures…

The sculpture Triad of King Mycerinus and Two Goddesses, which resides at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, was excavated from The Temple of Mycerinus in Giza and was created between 2548 - 2530 BCE, during the reign of Mycerinus. Made from greywacke, an incredibly coarse, dark sandstone, this sculpture uses variation in texture, incorrect scale, and line to draw attention to King Mycerinus in relation to the two divinities, and thus is an example of royalty as divinity. Overall, this sculpture depicts the goddess of the Hare Nome, the goddess Hathor, and the King Mycerinus (in that order from left to right), all carved from a single block of greywacke. Additionally, this is an example of a high relief sculpture, meaning that the sculpture is…

The Sarcophagus Panel Depicting the Abduction of Persephone was created by an anonymous Ionian sculptor around 190/200 CE. The Sarcophagus Panel Depicting the Abduction of Persephone is a high relief sculpture that shows Hades (god of the underworld) abducting Demeter’s (the harvest goddess) very young daughter Persephone so that he can marry the young girl. This relief sculpture was inspired by the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, which tells the story of Hades kidnapping Persephone. This work of art is a relief sculpture that was created out of marble since marble was a common medium that the ancient Greeks and Romans would use in sculptures. The sculpture itself is around a meter and a half tall and six meters wide.…

As you can see in the layout columns surrounded the temple in a traditional Doric manner (8x17). The larger inner area otherwise known as the cella, is where the statue of Athena was housed (2). The room behind that was a treasury housing all of Athena’s treasures. This is where we see the unusual use of iconic order with Doric as this room was supported by four columns of the iconic order (). The statues and art in the interior were a direct depiction of the culture in Athens and was appreciated by the people of Athens.…

At first glance, the Hercules and the Hydra sculpture is easy to pass by. Located in the outside sculpture garden it stands on a slightly elevated bronze platform, which stands on a bigger, more elevated concrete pedestal that also rests on a larger concrete pedestal that has four embedded lights, each on one corner. The viewing area is large and allows for the audience to view the sculpture up close and far, while still being able circumambulate around the statue at a variety of distances. Because of the vastness of the space around the sculpture, at first glance from the walkway, the sculpture does not seem to be a big piece. However, the closer the proximity towards the sculpture, the bigger the piece seems to get, appearing as if Hercules…

In this essay I will compare and contrast using contextual factors two murals. The first is Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximus and Attendants, a mosaic on the wall of the Sanctuary in Italy from the Byzantine era. The second being Raphael 's School of Athens, found on the wall of the Apostolic Palace, Rome painted during the Renaissance. Emperor Justinian, Bishop Maximianus and Attendants, was created for religious purposes, as was a lot of the art produced during the early Byzantine Empire. In 324 CE Constantine ‘ the Great’ was a Christian emperor who set up Constantinople, originally Byzantine, a city in the east as another city to rule Christianity from, alongside the capital Rome.…
