The ancient Greeks have shaped the modern world and established the building blocks for Western Civilization. Due to the conquest of Alexander the Great and the later adoption of certain cultural attributes into Roman life, Classical Greek architecture and philosophy still permeates within the modern world. Even the three orders of ancient Greek column design (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian) can be seen on government buildings and private residences throughout the United States and the nations of Europe. The word democracy comes from the Greek language and combines the words dêmos (“people”) and krátos (“rule”).
