Ancient Greek Food Research Paper

Improved Essays
The typical food served in Greece during the Classical period was olives, grapes, figs, bread, beans, and or cheese. Most of these dishes were so common because of the easy-access they had to it all. For example, they could grow the olives, grapes, figs, and wheat and keep goats for the milk and cheese. During the summer, fruit would be a popular dish because of the abundance of it that the warmer weather caused. They would store the dried fruit for the winter. A common meal consisted of bread, wine, and olive oil and the use of honey was large because of its ability to work as a natural sweetener. The Greeks inspired/created many popular recipes still floating around today such as stuffed grape leaves and lentil soup.

A prominent feature in Greek literature, food often serves as a cultural function through feasts and symbolizes hospitality and luxury. While food usually connotes festive times, Homer stretches the traditional perception of food in The Odyssey to something that is more ominous. From the beginning of the poem, Homer states that Odysseus and his crew were “destroyed by their own wild recklessness,” that they were “fools, who devoured the oxen of Helios, the Sun God, and he took away the day of their homecoming.” (Odyssey, 1.7 (27)). These words are depicted throughout the rest of the poem where Odysseus and his men show how the submission to their desires delayed their journey home.…

For my first essay I will be writing about the Greek cookout I went to on Monday September 5th, 2016. It was a very hot day, with no clouds in the sky, so all you felt were the sun beams hitting your skin. This was an informal event for the Greeks and students of George Mason University to get to know each other and just have a fun time; with music and food that got cooked on the grill. I went to this event with the intentions of finding which sorority I felt the most connection/ comfortable with. I went with two of my friends who are thinking about joining a sorority.…

Egyptian cuisine and some of its recipes date back 5000 years and archeologists have even revealed the use of food as a means of payment during ancient times. Of course, there have been some adjustments to the dishes over the years, mainly with the addition of ingredients and styles taken from other cultures (note the dropping of alcoholic drinks has also been a part of this change). Egyptian cuisine depends heavily on legumes such as beans and lentils as well as vegetables and onions making a regular appearance in most dishes. Vegetarians normally have no problem getting by in Egypt since meat has traditionally been expensive and thus less common. Around the Egyptian coast you will find more fish in the meals.…
