They may seem to, on the surface, but somewhere on the inside, underneath it all, they sense it, and they resent it.”-Neil Gaiman, Anansi Boys. Greek may not have control over fate, but they do have free thought. This presents an interesting dilemma, asking if one can exist without the other. Greek myths prove it can.…
From reading the Iliad, I have inferred that though the gods can affect the course on humans’ lives, they cannot go against fate when it claims a life or many lives. The gods hold great power over humans and influence many of their actions, causing us to question if the humans in Homer’s story have free will or not. The power with which gods have over humans can be seen in the cases of Zeus helping Achilles get the praise and honor he desires through literally tipping the scales in favor of the Trojans in book 8 and starting off the war in book 2. We also see it when Athena convinces Panderos to shoot an arrow at Menalaus, a stupid move on part of the human but a strategic move of the gods the get the ball of war rolling (book 4). Though the gods could be said to influence humans, the best word to describe their actions is interfering.…

Furthermore, one must ask whether the gods do intend to help the Greeks and other people, or if they truly process a fickle nature with no regard to destiny. In addition, the question of human influence over gods presents itself when further studying examples and evidence. Though often regarded as both fickle , biased, and the sole influencers of humans, the gods support a system of structure, but do not hold the sole power of influence, nor do they possess an entirely inconsistent nature.…
The ancient Greek world was a thriving metropolis of language, education, literature and philosophy at the beginning of Christianity and was significant factor for the early disciples. The first written languages were found on mud tablets and situated in Minoan Knossos Palace on the island of Crete. This is important to note, because observation is noted in that the Minoans and Mycenaean’s had an impact on the Greek language. The mud tablets found in the Knossos Palace had language consisting of Linear A perspectives. It is worth noting that the ancient history of Greece provides an understanding of how the history of the people has impacted and sustained the Greek language throughout the ages.…
Have you ever wondered why the Greeks did the Olympic games, well that's what I'm going to talk about. The Olympic games started long ago, with the Greeks not being very smart nor dumb, they invented the Olympic games. The Greeks invented a game called long jump, what the Greeks did in that game was, well its pretty self explanatory, but I will explain none the less, so basically they ran from a starting point and ran as fast as they could and they basically just tried to jump really far for competition and whoever won would get a point or whatever they had for score. The Greeks also had a game called chariot racing, again pretty self explanatory, so basically what they did was race with horses or mules pulling a wheel barrel looking ride,…
Storytelling has been an activity since the beginning of early civilization. With their stories people were able to convey messages as well as lessons that are better told than experienced. The Greeks were no different when it came to storytelling and as their religion came to develope so did many great stories of gods and heroes. These stories reflected ideas circulating through the culture on topics of morals as well as an explanation for how the world came to be. Greek people were very interested in the ideas of heroism.…
In the interactive oral by Daniel, Grace, Joyce, and Selma, we discussed Greek mythology and its influence in Greek society and plays. One of the details which the group mentioned was about the importance of animals and their symbolism in Greek mythology and plays. This was significant because Antigone was metaphorically compared with animals or animal-like characteristics multiple times throughout the play. Antigone was once compared by Creon to a “viper” and…

In today’s world, fate is considered to be a human-made construct that describes the succession of events in life that cannot be controlled; it is the opposite of free will. However, to the ancient Greeks, fate could absolutely be controlled. The humans often clashed with the Greek gods when trying to secure their destiny; humans believed they had free will, but the gods knew they had complete control over the people. This confrontation between humans and gods is seen throughout The Odyssey. The gods frequently alter situations the humans are in to change their outcomes while the people try to deal with their new situations and take back the control over their own lives.…
“After Zeus freed his siblings from Kronos’s stomach and after defeating the titans; Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades claimed a realm that they would rule over. Zeus chose the sky, Poseidon chose the sea, and Hades chose the underworld. Zeus could throw lighting bolts and he controlled some of the weather - like thunderstorms, and rain. Poseidon could control the sea, he ruled over horses and sea animals, and he held some power of the weather - like hurricanes and water tornadoes. Hades controls riches wealth, he protected the rights of the dead, and he has some control of the land - like creating hills, mountains, earthquakes,” the long haired woman explained while pointing to a statute of the gods.…
