The civilization of the Greeks included many civilizations and city states. Geography played a major role in in Greek history. Greece occupied a mountainous peninsula, that encompassed only 45,000 square miles of territory. The mountains and sea were especially significant to Greece. The mountains isolated Greeks from one another and the sea helped for trade and colonization. The sea was a great influence on Greek society. The Greeks would become seafarers and Greek civilization would spread throughout the Mediterranean region. The earliest civilization of the Greeks emerged in the Aegean region on the large island of Crete. This civilization was called the Minoan civilization.
