Ghana was the very first west African empire to have trading systems going all throughout Africa. Ghana was the very first in the whole wide world to make and use iron weapons making that invention a gold mine in trading. Speaking of gold mines, Ghana had too many of them! They had so much gold they didn’t know what to do with it. They used it in women’s makeup so it would grab women’s attention in Ghana’s trading system also. They put their gold on weapons such as shields just because they didn’t know what they would do with that much amount of gold. They also had plenty of salt mines and salt was very important because it preserved food and people needed that or else they would die from food poisoning.

Mansa Musa was a very rich king and the ruler of the Mali Empire. He made the Mali empire very wealthy and rich. Mansa Musa traveled to places such as Makkah to expand his trading system with other kingdoms. On his way back home to Mali, he brought Islamic scholars, architects, and administrators. Mali became more well known and plenty more kingdoms started trading with them for they had the legacy and items that Ghana left behind. Everyone wanted what Ghana had so Mali became Ghana 2.0 edition in trading. When Mali expanded, so did its trade system and very wealthy people started living in Mali because they want their wealth, in taxes, going to a wealthy kingdom.

Other items that were commonly trade were ivory, kola nuts, cloth, slaves, metal goods, beads, horses, rare birds, wares, honey, and livestock. The trade network was established between West Africa, Arabia, and Europe and that had cultural effects along the way. The main impact was that it introduced Islam to West Africa.
