The immense Roman Empire was the most advanced and powerful ancient empire. This mighty empire lasted almost 500 years, and was filled with many proud citizens, soldiers, and politicians. Of these citizens were great poets, philosophers, artists, and engineers that made many advancements in the arts and sciences. If these innovations lasted through time, our technological achievements of today would be more advanced. The Roman Empire’s reach was vast and influence felt all over the world. Many believed that a super power like Rome would never deteriorate.

One of the major problems with the Empire was that it was a vast city that spread from Spain to the Persian Gulf. The Roman government system was designed to control a city-state and not a giant empire. The government could not keep the vast area under its control due to their lack of transportation systems. As a result, the empire created two capitals which generated more problems. The western region was much weaker and collapsed first. The mistreatment of soldiers caused them to lose trust in emperors and began to seek guidance from their general. Frequently a power hungry general would use his influence over the soldiers to overthrow the emperor. An empire cannot last without the control of its own army and would soon end in anarchy. Majority of emperors that ruled were not competent enough to rule such a vast region. Many of the Roman emperors died a violent death while on the throne. Obviously, the people of Rome were not happy with the job that the emperors were doing. Rome was once ruled by its people, but was eventually ruled by power desperate
