Egypt is one of the oldest civilizations on earth. Ancient Egypt is notorious for its art, science, religion, and cultural aspects. Located in North Africa on the Mediterranean Sea, the civilization thrived from 8000 BC to 30 BC, with the first settlements beginning on the Nile River. The legacy of Ancient Egypt still stands today because of the grandiose arts and contributions to humanity’s greatest works. Considering conflicting expert opinions, the beginnings of the civilization are unclear. However, it is said that it was King Menes who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Stated by a scholar, “[The history of King Menes] comes from the Aegyptica (History of Egypt) by the ancient historian Manetho who lived in the 3rd century BCE” (“Ancient Egypt”, Mark 1). It was founded on the belief of their god Atum, who was accompanied by the spiritual force of heka which was essentially magic. The long, complex history of Egypt is divided into various periods. The Old Kingdom (2613-2181 BC) is the time of the creation of the pyramids and the Sphinx. In addition, houses were more or less lavish depending on social standing. Typically, houses were built from Nile mud with flat roofs. Often, the houses included a courtyard where meals were cooked. People would own servants who might grind wheat or cook.
