Animals played a variety of significant roles in religious and daily life in ancient Egypt, and this includes the domesticated cat (Felis silvestris catus). Cat remains are most often mummified and seem to have been used in both utilitarian as well as non-utilitarian votive/sacred contexts (Ikram, 2005). Thus unlike the present day, where cats as pets is a global phenomenon, in ancient Egypt a significant role was placed on cats as religious entities.
