Ancient China Craftsmanship

Improved Essays
I have chosen furniture to focus on from the Ancient China as there are a lot of detailed workmanship or craftsmanship in the work from the past. Most of the items that were dug out from the ground were shaped and crafted uniquely. The material being used to make the throne for the emperor in the Qing Dynasty is wood.Traditional and detailed skill are needed to carve this chair. This attracts me as during this modern generation, many people are utilising this work from ancient China. Moreover, the work that was from ancient China had made its way to the European countries which really shows that it is a successful crafting-ship. Not only that, the throne include carvings of the mythical beast which symbolises power whereby only those from the royal family of ancient China can own it. These carvings also attract people from around the world as a form of art. Most of all, it requires lots of workmanship and patience in carving the item. …show more content…
They might find the product queer looking but at the same time, it is attractive to them too. It uses wood which is durable depending on the type and being able to blend with many of the modernised design at home. Wood is capable of giving off a natural and soothing feeling. With many people owning this type of work, many industries started building items with wood as the demands of it are increasing rapidly over the years. Therefore, not only chairs are being built this way, many other household items such as cupboard, ash trays and bed frames were crafted by wood and some even being carved with interesting detail.

In conclusion, I learned that simplicity with skills might be the best way of creating new things. However, above all, creativity is still the key. We could extract some of the ideas which were passed down from the past to create a new form of art like furniture, architecture or another

The process in which Ah Xian uses to create these busts are each quite extensive. He uses female Chinese models to create a set of molds, from which a Resin-Fibre cast of each bust is taken. A recurrent theme in ancient artifacts is animal symbolism. Both the Kunz Axe and the Tlingit Armor feature animal symbolism and rare materials (jade and Chinese coins, for example). This helps one determine what was valued in the culture, which animals one would want to borrow strength from, which objects one would use to show rank. Despite these artifacts coming from different cultures (the Olmec and Tlingit Indian cultures respectively), these pieces share many similarities in concept and dedication.…

One of the first pieces that interested me during my trip to the MET was a stone sculpture from Indonesia and other neighboring lands, known as the “Ritual Seat for a Noble” (Osa’osa). I found it very creative that a large bird could be carved into a seat. I thought that this indicated that the Ono Niha people worshipped certain animals as their culture. After further research, I discovered that this seat was made during the 19th century, specifically for high ranking officials as their throne. In addition, the seat is usually considered a ceremonial requirement during special occasions.…

Writing an object biography means looking at the object 's history, from the moment it was made to the moment it disappeared, or to the present if the object still exists. Object biographies are passive narratives, because objects are inherently inanimate. An object biography will consequently not look at what the object 'accomplished ' during its lifetime, but rather, how the surroundings of the object transformed it through time. A biography can thus concentrate on several themes, or several changes, that the object went through. These changes can be physical, such as the modification of the appearance of the object, or changes of location.…
