The article I chose to discuss is “Ancient Women Artists May Be Responsible for Most Cave Art” by Rachel Nuwer. I was drawn to this article because I have never heard about such a possibility before and this was a new concept for me. The article started talking about how most scientists have always assumed that the artists who drew cave paintings were males because they often depicted animals and hunting. It is known that during the paleolithic and neolithic era, men were usually hunted while women were the gatherers. The article explained how the scientists studied the handprints left by the artists. Using an algorithm that calculated things like the ratios of fingers to one another,

The writer is Rachel Nuwer, and from what i can tell she does not have any credentials. The only description that was given is that she is a “freelance science writer based in Brooklyn.” After doing some research on her I found out that she has two master's degrees and she studies biology. However, none of this information is included in the article itself. Another reason I was uncertain about the credibility of this article was the amount of ads this site had. I saw ads for clothing, mcdonalds, and taxslayer around the article. It definitely led me to question the accuracy of this article. When I finished reading the article I continued the scroll downwards to see if there were any other recommended articles. I found that there were many articles or videos, yet none of them seemed to be educational or quality content, many of them were linked to buzzfeed. The only reason I even considered this article to be remotely accurate was because there was a link to national geographic. The link led you to a similar article, written by national geographic. National geographic is thought to an accurate sources so i decided to give the article a chance. A secondary source is the writing of someone who was not present during the time that the event was occurring. Anyone can write a secondary source. They may either be experts in the field or someone who is simply interested in it. This is why secondary sources might be more misleading or not as accurate as a primary source might be.
There was a connection i saw in the article to what we have been studying in class. The article talked about cave paintings and who they were drawn by. In class we have been discussing the paleolithic and neolithic time

“Prehistoric cave paintings are exactly what the name says, paintings in caves from prehistoric times. They are from a really long time ago and they were the first known from of art by humans. People probably did this when they had some free time and nothing really better to do besides sit around and do nothing.” That is what I thought to myself before watching Werner Herzog’s film Cave of Forgotten Dreams. Many people do not understand the importance of these old pieces of art and what they can tell about past life.…

The article I found is on the discovery of Homo naledi. Happened upon only by chance, the struggle to find Homo naledi was as hard as placing it with either Australopithecus or Homo. I found this article interesting because the discovery of a potentially new species could give us a clearer picture of our ancestors. We may never know the complete story, but as long as we keep on researching and exploring new ideas, our understanding will grow. In addition to adding to our understanding of human origins, the article has a dash of mystery and highlights the importance of women in the field.…

The Cave of Forgotten Dreams is one of the oldest caves of all time. In fact, it is determined that the cave existed for about 30,000-33,000 years (Herzog, 2010). In 1994, a small group of French scientist lead by Jean-Marie Chauvet discovered the cave, and when the French government realized how precious it was, they shut off the access to it (Herzog, 2010). However, Werner Herzog a documentary filmmaker got permission to access the cave. He believed that the Chauvet Cave contains most of the oldest human art ever discovered, so he gathered a group of researchers and they started their journey trying to understand what happened there in over 32,000 years ago.…

Woman in Greek Mythology were viewed unworthy and unfairly as well as sexual objects. Although women, such as the Greek goddess and heroines, still held great power as well as beauty. “The Greeks ' most important legacy is not, as we would like to think, democracy; it is mythology” (Lefkowitz, 2001, p. 207). The essence of this quote written in an article entitled “Women in Greek Myth” by Mary L. Lefkowitz in 2001 is basically that the Greek’s relied and believed greatly in the idea of Greek mythology. Greek mythology was basically the religious practice of the people of ancient Greece because it was basically a form of worship toward the gods and the heroines they thought to be almighty.…

The topic of archaeology programs in museums and the role that popular culture plays in the public’s misconceptions is not easily covered in a limited timeframe nor a single document. The author considers this thesis a possible introduction to a much larger study. There is always more that can be learned, more comparisons made, and new programs evaluated. With an unlimited timeframe, the ability and funds to travel, and perhaps surveying assistance, more programs and museum educators could be surveyed for comparison. A deeper analysis of the “Anthropologists in the Making” summer camp could also be done, looking at the camp throughout multiple years.…
