Anchoring Heuristics

Accepting another individual's input as a fact.
Anchoring Heuristic can be a have a negative effect on my decision of which college to pick. For example, there was a college in Texas Huston-Tillotson University, a historically (predominantly) black college, my mother disagreed with me going there because of a bad reputation it had. Instead she gave me a suggestion of going to St. John’s University, saying it has a better reputation and it is close to home. Anchoring heuristic in this case will have a negative effect in my college choice because instead of researching more about Huston-Tillotson University, I would have just accepted my mother’s advice. Thankfully I did not because there is not recent, in the past 10 years, any problems or reports

Overconfidence- similar to being conceited, cocky or arrogant.
A problem with overconfidence in my decision making is believing that I am a special case and whichever college I wish to go to will pick me. As a result of this, I only apply to one or two colleges expecting to be accepted, even when there is less than a fifty percent chance of me being accepted. This will have a negative effect on me because if I apply to just one or two colleges expecting to get accepted into both, there is a larger possibility they might not accept me and I will have to either start for the next semester or just wait out one academic year.

ii. Belief Perseverance- An example can be that as an eighty-five to eighty-nine average student my grade will help me to get into college. There is no need for extracurricular, like sports, after school work or leadership programs my grade will suffice. Though you teachers, parents and guidance counselors have told you that these days colleges are looking for a well-rounded student inside and outside of school, you still believe you grade will be enough to put you in certain colleges. This will have a negative effect on me because college today are looking of well-rounded students in almost every aspect of their lives not only academics. If someone and I had the same scores however, the other person has after school volunteering or sports, there is a higher possibility they will be

While a person who has a higher SAT score seems like a better candidate, one score cannot show how tirelessly the individual worked for their score. Growth and work ethics are essential factors to look at when accepting prospect students because someone who knows how to work hard will accomplish much more than someone who doesn’t know how to function without the luxury that they have grown accustomed to. To address the reverse racism concern, “There has never, ever, ever been a national set of laws or system put in place to systematically oppress white people or push them to a status that is ‘less than,’” (Lewis). Historically, there has never been any sort…

In my freshman year of high school, I was placed into only one honors class, despite a strong academic record from junior high. Given my love of learning and excellence, I was exceedingly disappointed. Therefore, with the same resolution that I applied to my sports ambitions, I committed to my class time and homework. I met with my teachers when I had questions and tackled the material with energy and intensity. My efforts paid off!…

More exact forms of predicting a student’s grades include using high school class rank and high school grade point averages. Taking this into account, Source D states that, “...high school grade-point averages…as opposed to general aptitude as supposedly measured by the SAT--- correlate more highly with freshman grade-point averages than does the SAT”. High school grades represent how well a student may have done over the course of their whole high school academic year, just as college grades represent how well a student may have done over the course of their whole college academic year. Consequently, the SAT is not able to represent a college freshman’s grades as accurately since both high school and college mimic one another, unlike the SAT which only tests certain aspects of a student’s intelligence. Along with predicticting first-year grades in college, “...females on average score 35-40 points lower than males on the SAT I, but receive better high school and college grades” (Source G).…

“I know applying to colleges is the last thing you want to do right now, but you might change your mind,” a trusted friend told me. It was December of my senior year of high school, and college application deadlines were approaching quickly. I was recovering from a major illness at the time, and wasn’t ready to think about college. My plan was to spend a year living at home and working before I pursued higher education. In the following months, my recovery progressed rapidly.…

Like many students, college students always want the easiest way to attain a good grade. That was what I experienced in high school. Teachers give credit for work completed rather than the accuracy of the work and students would receive credit for things that had nothing to do with materials being taught in class. For example, my teacher would give extra credit on essays for bringing tissue boxes to class. In high school, students get used to slacking off and procrastinating however teachers seemed like they did not care to help discourage these bad habits.…

The margin of years that I have left before I graduate is becoming smaller every minute. I will be a junior next year and will not have very much time to think about the college I have in mind. Many people find it hard to look for the perfect college that fits them.
