There are times, out of nowhere, when people would ask me what my race is. I have heard people say that they thought I was mixed, white, Mexican, Asian, and even Spanish. Unfortunately, they are all wrong, because I am mostly African American. When I ask my family what else am I mixed with, they don’t really know that well either. However, I tried to get as much information as I could. I asked my mother about my dad’s side of the family and my grandmother for my mother’s side of the family. There is limited knowledge because no one really thought to dig deeper and there is really anyone else I can ask except for my mother and grandmother. I guess this would have been the perfect time to use Ancestry.com. When I asked my grandmother about my ethnic background, she that I am mostly African American. However, she said that her grandmother has some Cherokee in her. Her grandmother was the one who raised her and she loved her very much. My grandmother said that her grandmother had beautiful long, silky hair. Indians all have long and beautiful hair. Maybe having some Cherokee in me is the reason that I have long and nice hair. I never met my great great grandmother, but I heard that she was an amazing woman. I wish that I got …show more content…
However, she did say that my father is half Portuguese, so that makes me part Portuguese. When most people say that they are Spanish, Asian, or Portuguese, you would expect them to know how to speak the language a little bit. I think that it is funny when my mother says that he doesn’t know how to speak Portuguese in the slightest. The closest it is from my family speaking a foreign language is my three years taking Spanish in school. Even then, I still barely know how speak the language. My father’s side of the family lives in Cincinnati, so I could ask them myself because I don’t have their number. I only met them twice before as far as I

“They are trying to figure out what I am”, is the thought I possess every time someone stares at me. To the ones who believe asking, “What are you?” is a valid conversation starter, I am multiracial and proud, but to simplify my ethnicities to others when asked, I identify myself as Asian. I was stereotyped because of how we are perceived in media and society. I spent years cowering in my own skin because others made me believe I was not Asian because of the size of my eyes, the color of my hair, and my personal interests. I was ashamed of what I looked like since I was convinced it embodied who I am as a person.…

The ethnic heritage of Mexicans is mixed, with alternating combinations of African, Indigenous, and European ancestry. Therefore, Mexicans are heterogeneous in their genetic characteristics, differing from having light to brown or dark eye color and skin with several in the brown and mestizo middle. However, innumerable Americans tend to view Mexicans through the stereotypical lens of being non-white or brown, yet to a great extend indigenous-looking. On account of the previous statements, I, Mexican-American, usually provide enigmatical responses to questions based on race, perhaps reflecting my own uncertainty about my race and…

Having both African American ancestry itself fails to show true understanding and respect for cultural differences, I have been recognized as having showing leadership and academic achievement even while being thrown into unfamiliar cultures. Largely my curiosity of wanting to discover other cultures was because I sought to find where I fit in. Among the invisible line of separation between certain cultural groups of people in the lunch room, I jumped around, but always found myself in the center; where a group of each student from each corner came together because they didn’t fit in. More often than not, these kids were also intelligent and when not competing with them academically, they would be my support and motivation to do well. This…

My research on the well-known Ancestry.com website dates back to 2012 where there has since been an addition of over 1000 members to my family tree. After learning that my maternal second great-grandfather moved to the United States from Italy in the late 1800 to early 1900’s, my interest has broadened to learning more about my ethnicity. Results from an AncestryDNA test further promotes my ties with Italy, Ireland, and Great Britain, as well as at least six other regions. Between my maternal grandmother and descendants from my father’s exceptionally large family, I likely have ties among the German and Dutch as well.…
