The anatomical term ‘Anterior’ refers to the front view of the body or in reference to the front of the body. Generally when referring to anatomical positioning of the body, it is positioned anterior and viewing the body front on.
The term ‘Medial’ refers to describing something towards or in the mid line of the body. In anatomical diagrams the midline would be a line drawn down the centre of the head down to between the legs and feet. For example the Medial ligament in the knee joint is on the inside of the joint as it is near the middle of the body.
The term ‘Distal’ refers to parts furthest away from the centre of the body. For example hands would be distal from the body when abducted from the body.
