Analyzing Yunior's Poem

Decent Essays
The language used in the story is abusive, the author used “bitches” and “sucia” to describe women. Also, in the story it mentioned that “only a bitch of color comes to Harvard to get pregnant. White women don’t do that. Asian women don’t do that. Only fucking black and Latina women”. This shows Yunior had bias against women of color and I can feel the disrespectful he had towards the women of color in the story. When I read the story, I can feel his pain and how dark his life was after he broke up with his ex-girlfriend. I also think the language author used to describe Yunior’s life after moved to Boston was intense. Although author used both English and Spanish, I think the conversion between these two languages were smooth. The story was

Yunior himself often times blames the fact that he is Dominican for his sexual propensity, and the women in his life do the same. For instance, Yunior’s college girlfriend, the one in which he confides his inappropriate relationship with Ms. Lora, asks his mom if she knew about the relationship between her son and La Professora to which she responds, “He’s just like his father and brother,” to which the girlfriend then responds matter-of-factly, “Dominican men, right, Doña?” Similar to the way Yunior stereotypes Puerto Rican women as being loose, the Dominican men in Diaz’s stories are stereotyped as being “sucios,” which loosely translates to dogs. Yunior even treats his sexual desire as a disease, often referring to it as the “gene,” which he hoped had skipped him. We see similar parallels between ethnic and sexual identity being drawn Alexie’s…

Written by Junot Diaz, "How to Date a Brown Girl (Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie)" at first glance seems like a controversial story about how to date girls of different races. The narrator explicitly and vividly explains the dos and don’ts of how to become intimate with a girl depending on if the girl is Black, Brown, White, or Mixed. Nonetheless, the story conveys so much more and touches on many topics and situations involving what society deems as ideal and the stereotypes of different cultures. The story beautifully conveys what it feels like being a mixed child and a minority. With symbolism, satirical tone, and different sentence types, Diaz conveys the difficulties and struggles of fitting in to the societal and cultural norms emplaced…

Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…

Chrystos is making the argument that all white people have things that they had no idea that they originated from Native American culture and that in a way they are disgracing their culture and beliefs. She assumes that we don’t have Native roots until the end of the poem saying that maybe we have a grandma who was Native American. She is making the stereotype that white people don’t have any regard for other cultures and that whites think they are superior to others. I think “it” is referring to some people who don’t know very much about other cultures and were something or own something without knowing its roots. She does seem somewhat angry because she just wants them to know where the things they have truly came from and how to respect…
