Analyzing Van Gogh's Starry Night

Improved Essays
I think the scream is a great painting overall. I wanted to do Van Gogh’s Starry Night, but realized that wasn’t an option after reading the paper requirements since we looked at it in class. I was going to go for another Van Gogh painting, but when I looked up his name I found The Scream and went for that one.
One thing that really brings the piece together is the lines. They definitely lead your eye all around the paper. You start focusing in on the face and then the blue lines of the river let your eyes flow upward and you get a glimpse of the sunset. The blue lines continue to the left of the painting and lead you to the people walking across the bridge in the back. The lines and brushstrokes of the bridge then guide your eyes to circle

Personally, when I hear the title without the image, I think of the movie with the scream mask and though this face has a similar shape to the mask, you can understand that they’re two completely aspects of English. The movie references the person, the villain, whilst this painting seems to reference the action. A particular scream that occurred, or more specifically is occurring in the piece. The title and the drama and stress emphasized in the man’s face to me shows surprise, shock, fear maybe even. So something obviously is going on in front of this person that is startling. The context of the painting tells me the scream was very, very loud. The enormous opening of his mouth and evidence of shock in his face, along with the fact that the piece is titled The Scream just shows that it was loud, ear-piercing, and roaring even. Even the flow of the river, the lines flow off of the head and swirl around like the scream was heard from miles and miles away. But, if it was so powerful and intense, than why are the two men in the back just continuing on their day? Why are they not rushing over to see what all the fuss is about? They are walking towards the man but they definitely show no signs of hurry or rush. Was nobody listening? Is that why the movement of the background is so loud, but also so calm? I also wonder why the screamer is shaped almost like a Martian. Is the artist trying to portray himself and his own emotions? Does he feel separated from the rest of the world? Maybe he feels like he is screaming for help but nobody can hear him. Maybe he feels like he is in a parallel universe where everything is not as it really is. Maybe he wants to be in a parallel universe. It makes me feel worried and anxious for the screamer. Is he going to be okay? What is he looking at that makes him so startled? The dark colors also help this feeling of anxiety. The purples, blues, and blacks

The first painting I have picked is Rachel Wieland, “The Healing Power of Water” in the Art Gallery in Bergen Community college. Wieland created a landscape painting, 20x16, in the early 2000’s. A piece that has rough paint structure to reflect its power of healing, not only the water, but the leaves on the water as well. It’s rough paint structure looks a lot like Vincent van Gogh, Starry Night, 1889.…

The Japanese Bridge 1923 artwork reminds me of some of kandinsky’s work but in a much looser and less geometric way. It has a very unique style of brush work that draws the viewer in and brings us into a much more ethereal and flowing mindset and mental landscape. This piece is different from the others by Monet we have seen in class in that is has a much less focused and planned color scheme (or at least appears unplanned on the surface). This is almost certainly due to the cataract symptoms discussed earlier. It also is much more impressionistic than his earlier works, and seems to use slightly dulled hues and colors, something which can be seen as a pattern in his works over time due to cataract brown tinge symptoms and overall light diffusement.…

The large group of bodies on the left side of the painting has figures with arms reaching out onto the foreground which is contrasted with the small group on the right of the painting who are standing up straight, huddled in the corner. The group on the left is painted in earthly reds and browns while the group on the left is in a cooler toned setting. The two groups complement each other and yet show conflict. Their opposing characteristics adds to the conflict within the painting. There is a sense of push and pull from them but no resolution; they meet in the middle and add to the orderly chaos of the world, and the space itself.…

    Edvard Munch The Scream

The Scream by Edvard Munch is an iconic painting in today’s time, much like the Mona Lisa has been in the past. Munch found his inspiration for this piece of art from an actual place located on a hill in Norway and at the bottom of the hill was the madhouse where Munch’s sister was kept. The painting is of a person with a ghostly face, standing beside a railing. What catches your eyes in this photo is the person is standing there shrieking, mouth wide open, with a hand on both sides of their face. Once you look beyond the person you notice two silhouettes who appear to be men and a city far off in the distance.…

For my creolization project I wanted to do images from back home so I decided to do a couple images that I had took when i was back at home in Hawaii. I will be going 3 images, for each image I will be talking about how I think it reflects an element or theme that Ivor Miller went over in his graffiti article and how it reflects to one of the Creative Spirit goals for class. What I got out of Miller’s article is that creolization is the concept of being able to bring two different aspects together and making it into one.…
