Before we started writing, I told Triven we would be writing for ten minutes and that he could write a narrative or true story on any of the topics that we listed the day before. It took him ten minutes to write two sentences, so I gave him some more time. We spent a total of fourteen minutes writing, I had to prompt him to keep writing about 3-4 times. Triven is in 3rd grade and he exhibited very little enthusiasm when reading his piece back to me. He mumbled and didn’t seem very confident with what was written. He did add words to make it sound like complete sentences, for example on the 4th line he said, “you can get” and on the 5th line said, “you can go to weird places.” I thanked him for working hard on his writing and said I learned

Triven is at his grade level according to organization section, he is consistent with discussing the same topic in his writing. He used supportive details to describe the game he plays. According to this writing pieces he needs work the most work in punctuation and endings. Triven can end his sentences with punctuation, and use capital letters for the beginning. He does have spaces between his words, but was not always consistent with the spacing. Triven did write an ending, but more could have been said. I am planning on using a picture book that we have read together Aunt Chip and the Great Triple Creek Dam Affair to look at what types of punctuations the author is using. Then teach Triven about the rules. Other reinforcing activities I can do are, having a paragraph with no punctuation at all, allowing Triven and I to create signs so that every time we see a (period, exclamation point, and comma) a certain punctuation we do a body movement, lastly I could create cardboard signs so it could be more like a game when working on punctuation. By using these strategies, it should help Triven improve his punctuation. Also, hopefully by using more punctuation he will want to add bigger spacing between his
