Analyzing Tom Ford's Advertising

This ad is for the company Tom Ford, specifically their cologne product. It was published in 2007. Tom Ford’s advertisements appear in magazines such as Vogue, which displays how it is geared towards upper class people. Furthermore, it is targeted towards men. It shows how if a man wears this cologne, he can get any woman and anything from them. This ad uses bright red on the woman’s finger tips to draw attention to those areas on the body. Also the writing is in all caps white at the bottom of the page. This makes the message very clear; however is not the main part of the advertisement. The cologne bottle is placed in several places on the female body. For example, at the top of the ad the bottle is laying right in between the ladies breasts. In another picture the bottle is placed in between her thighs in suggestive areas. This ad uses sexual appeal to promote their product. That’s how they draw the attention of the males. Also, it shows the “perfect” yet unrealistic woman. She is slim yet toned and curvy, her body is hairless and she also has glowing skin. It is what every woman has been brainwashed to want. It is an example of how media influences people. Naturally a woman would not say “I wish I had no hair on my body”, but because of the messages out there in society, women do.
Although there are images and influences present for women in this advertisement, this ad is mainly geared towards men. When men see an advertisement like this, they associate the cologne with dominance over women. This advertisement visualizes how women are nothing but sexualized bodies and that is the women’s sole purpose. They are selling their product through promoting a lifestyle that the men wish to have. As a result advertisement has built an industry off of objectifying women and portraying them as sexual objects of desire, rather than regular human beings as a supply to the demand of male gaze.
