The movie starts during the Civil War where the US and the CSA are in a stalemate taking cover behind fences and trees, the tactics are similar to those of World War 1 by the fact that there's little action, but when there is action it's bloody. While the Union troops were transporting Lt. Dunbar to the main fort for trial. The Indians attacked the Cavalry with surprise and killed them all, in this epic battle Dunbar kills off some of the troops by strangling them with his handcuffs, he escapes with his life and lives with the indians. The weapons used were Colt revolvers and Henry Repeaters on the United States side, and bow and arrows and tomahawks on the indian side, these are accurate.
Over all I’d say that Dances With Wolves is a good movie that is pretty historically accurate. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes the war for the Plains and the Civil War. It also shows good medical practices in the
