Title In the story ‘’Gryphon’’ by Charles Baxter, the main character, Tommy, defends a strange substitute teacher named Miss. Ferenczi. There are multiple reasons why Tommy defends Mrs. Ferenczi, but I am only going to tell you five reasons. I think Tommy likes Mrs. Ferenczi because she is strange. While riding on the school bus home with Carl Whiteside Tommy says the phrase, “I had liked her. She was strange.” (P.56 L. 413) This phrase shows that Tommy likes strange and mysterious things, just like Mrs. F’s stories. In addition, Tommy also defends Mrs. F because Tommy likes to believe in strange things, like Mrs. F’s stories.
