Before discussing the arguments about twitter’s legitimacy as a platform it is important to understand what Twitter is. Twitter was created on March 21st, 2006 and at the time was known as Twttr (Bellis para. 5). The first person to Tweet was the co-founder Jack Dorsey tweeting “just setting up my twttr” (Bellis para. 6) . With only 280 characters to spare Twitter has now become one of the fastest ways to broadcast news to a worldwide audience. According to Twitter.com: Twitter is a service for friends, family, and coworkers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. In addition, a “Hashtag” (#) is a symbol that is used before a keyword that allows people to easily follow topics that interest them (“Using hashtags on Twitter” para. 1). Although on the surface the social media platform seems quite simple it is important to note its true depth in our world. Given its 330 million monthly active users as of the third quarter of 2017(Number para. 1) Twitter has become the prime platform to share news as soon as it occurs. The world has faced many ground breaking events an example being the recent Las Vegas terrorist attack on October 1st, 2017. As the news broke of the tragedy, videos, updates and pictures were being posted by the second. Within minutes the #Lasvegasshooting was trending. As millennials become increasingly dominate in today’s society the use of newspapers has become obsolete. The ease of accessing breaking news from a mobile device or computer allows many to stay informed in a quicker matter. The world has never experienced news like this …show more content…
Exposure to the event from videos allows for news channels, authorities and the general public to understand what happened. The proof from the source itself gives everyone a sense of what is really going on. Not only does the picture or video give us information but it also never lets us forget about what happened that day in history. It has become our own personal archive of news events that has occurred in the past that will be accessible to those who have created a profile on the micro-blogging website. “You heard it here first” now holds a whole new meaning as it is in fact true that most people heard it on Twitter first. This new phenomenon was accurately described by Barry Ritholtz describing the aftermath of the Boston marathon on April 15th, 2013 saying
