“The New Colossus” is beckoning the downtrodden to the United States, but it is also implying that some will not receive this freedom. It lists a few generic attributes of those who might benefit from life in the United States, but the key quality of all immigrants is a yearning to “breathe free.” This freedom, whether it is religious freedom, free speech, or simply a shot at fulfilling the American Dream, is paramount to what make the United States a great destination for immigrants but is also what makes the United States a great home for its citizens. Hughes began the poem with the general idea of the American dream but as the poem went on, he talked about the cruel realities faced by people who are in the lower class of the American society and that the American dream was never true for them, including himself. In the first two stanza, Hughes showed a positive tone when he said “let it be that great strong land of love”(line 7)This line shows how in Hughes’ heart, America should be a land that makes people feel secured and surrounded by warmth and love. Both of my parents came separately on different journeys from the Dominican Republic as immigrants, not knowing a single thing about America. Although my parents did not arrive to the United States on a boat heading to Liberty Island, the depth and meaning the statue of Liberty has towards immigrants is what makes it so personal for my family and I. " The statue of the liberty poem, "New Colossus" was created by Emma Lazarus in 1883. It reads how freedom in America is expressed by the Statue of Liberty; the mother of exiles will open her arms to those who have nowhere else to be truly free. The ways to balance the values of freedom expressed in the sonnet and immigration in our country are granting amnesty to illegal immigrants, allowing more wanting individuals to come to America, and not building a wall along the Mexican border. Between 1886 and 1924, 14 million immigrants, ancestors to some of today 's American, entered the United States through New York.…
