Decent Essays
The poem “one, two, three” was written by Hannah Senesh. The poem was found in her cell after her execution. It is as follows: one-two-three… eight feet long. two strides across… the rest is dark… life is a fleeting question mark. One-two-three… maybe another week. Or the next month may still find me here, but death, I feel is very near. I could have been 23 next July. I gambled on what mattered most. The dice were cast. I lost. This poem speaks about the fear and misery brought upon the Jews due to antisemitism; Not only was fear and misery brought on, but death followed a majority of those who felt the fear and misery. In the poem, Hannah states that she “could have been 23 next July”, this line is important because it helps display the theme

There are in total two poems in Slant Six I used as models to write this poem. The first one is “Someone asks, what makes this poem American?’ and it inspires me to find connections among daily things. Specifically, Erin draws the conclusion that “American is anywhere” at the first time by discussing about where the “normal” American food comes from and different customs behind these American food and how American society contributes to the combination of different cultures. Once Erin draw the conclusion that Americanness is everywhere, she works on verifying her conclusion by both describing a normal American mini-marts, Bill’s, and using examples to convince people have opposite ideas.…

The main character, Hannah, was the niece of a survivor of the Holocaust but did not feel that knowing about her own heritage was important till she ended up experiencing it herself. A lot of the youth feel as though their history is irrelevant and should stay history, the issue with that is if we do not know how far we have come we do not appreciate all that we currently have. Once people forget their roots it is like they forget their identity, it is as if they are lost souls and they are unaware. The second question is “Aside from weapons, how did the Nazis have control and power over the Jews in camp?”, in both the novella as well as in the movie The Devil’s Arithmetic the Nazis used a series of tactics to belittle the Jews resulting in control.…

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

“The things you won’t know can’t hurt you”. In the poem, “First Poem for You,” written by Kin Addonozio, we explore the mind of a person who is deeply in love, but seems confused about the relationship she is in with her partner. We do not know if the narrator is a woman, or a man, but the way the narrator expresses herself seems like a woman; since woman seem more intimate about relationships. Hannah’s attitude towards practicing her faith shows a high veneration that she carries towards religion. Whereas Mary prays for her own benefit, for example, while waiting to hear of Jay’s fate, Hannah displays a genuine deference towards the sacred powers at play. During this instance, Hannah finds herself conflicted on Mary’s prayer at that particular moment, noting that “for the first time in her life [Hannah] suspected how mistakenly prayer can be used” (121). Hannah’s actions reflect an independence from overwhelming spiritual guidance while remaining considerate of her servitude to the Lord. Hannah serves as one of Agee’s only positive reflections on religion in A Death in the Family.…

Another pattern in the poem is the use of the words, "We passed" in lines 9,11, and 12. In line 17 similar wording is used but is changed to, "We paused". The poem flows smoothly which adds to the beauty of the poem. It is a well told story of the speaker remembering her former life and the day of her death.
