“This work tells the night of transition of a beloved familiar of mine, on a night in a hospital. With no dramatic or compassionate intention, I created "La Noche" to amplify our separation and our unitive annihilation, like a song whispered in the ear of the one who goes, and the one who stays. An ode to everything we experience on this loss, and everything that we know stay forever when the body of the beloved is gone. This song should be heard by night, in absolute darkness with headphones, to obey the sound after initial resistance.…
There are in total two poems in Slant Six I used as models to write this poem. The first one is “Someone asks, what makes this poem American?’ and it inspires me to find connections among daily things. Specifically, Erin draws the conclusion that “American is anywhere” at the first time by discussing about where the “normal” American food comes from and different customs behind these American food and how American society contributes to the combination of different cultures. Once Erin draw the conclusion that Americanness is everywhere, she works on verifying her conclusion by both describing a normal American mini-marts, Bill’s, and using examples to convince people have opposite ideas.…
Logan B Knives Essay In the Poem Knives by Jane Yolen the idea of love is represented through symbols and each have their own meaning. The first is the idea of a love slipper. It represents the idea of easy love and how love can just fit on anyone or anyone can fit into love, “they thought love was like an old slipper: pull it on and it fits.” it also means comfortable love.…
Here is a quick summary of the whole book. A guy named Boy Willie and another guy named Lymon came to Pittsburgh from Mississippi looking to sell watermelons. He had a truck full of them. The two go into Boy Willie’s uncle, Doaker house (It’s around 5:00 in the morning).…
There is a saying once you climb on you now have to ride it out. That means that once you start something you need to finish what you started. That is what Uncle Emil says to Calvin Gant, his nephew, while he holds on to the back of a swimming moose. Cal, the main character, meets a girl in high school who is beaten at home and does not tell anyone because she is afraid that her dad will beat her more. Cal attempts at trying to get Gretchen’s dad, Mr. Luttermann, arrested by trying to frame him of stealing alcohol from an liquor store, but gets caught stealing the alcohol for the plan.…
Vodcast Script Hello and welcome to another episode of 'Poetic Voices '. In this episode we will be analysing the song 'Moonstruck ' by Kev Carmody. Kev Carmody is the son of an Irish father and Murri mother, who both come from a powerful oral tradition. This means that he grew up with music around him, and he still talks of the songs he was first taught through his ancestors. Carmody career in music began while he was in university, however he did not, and still doesn 't see himself as the typical "musician" the way most musicians see themselves.…
“The things you won’t know can’t hurt you”. In the poem, “First Poem for You,” written by Kin Addonozio, we explore the mind of a person who is deeply in love, but seems confused about the relationship she is in with her partner. We do not know if the narrator is a woman, or a man, but the way the narrator expresses herself seems like a woman; since woman seem more intimate about relationships. The woman takes us to a world where she compares her love to her lovers’ tattoos. Even though she is scared of not being permanent in his life, she lets us know how she will continue to try, but try in “darkness.”…
The civil unjust in the streets of America lives in the poems of Tracy K. Smith, a Pulitzer Prizewinning author of the book Life on Mars. Witnessing the death of her people at the hands of police officers, Smith feels troubled about bringing a new life into a prejudice world. In poems such as: “Unrest in Baton Rouge” and “They May Love All That He Has Chosen and Hate All That He Has Rejected,” Smith feels compelled to concentrate her writing around the absence of humanity through police brutality in the streets of America. Tracy K. Smith’s poem “Unrest in Baton Rouge” portrays the true events that occurred at the scene of Alton Sterling’s death. The video of Alton’s death went viral across America and pushed many locals into rage and protests.…
To many, the words “Individual” and “Community” seem to oppose each other. However, the word individual is derived from the Latin root individuum meaning “an atom, indivisible particle” which shows how a true community is able to function — as one. Slam Poetry, Flag Football, and Experiential Learning all represent a personal connection between an individual and their community. When a slam poet takes the stage, whether it be in front of a thousand people or in front of one person, and clutches a microphone they become the voice of a community.…
While confined her in the Bacon Computer Center, I came across your recent statement calling the scandalous Kentucky clerk, Mrs.Kim Davis, “a hero”. Seldom do I pause to answer criticism or respond to the work and ideas of others, but this has called out to me to respond in a way I cannot describe. I will however, detail and specify all of the points of your letter that are improper and wrong, and will correct them accordingly. I would just like to remind you, Mr.Thoreau, what year we are living in. 2015. Far from the days of civil disobedience you and I lived through.…
I will be discussing the transforming effect that the literature I have read has had on me. I will outline the discrimination in Freak the mighty and The Curious incident of the dog in the night time. Also, in Much Ado about Nothing I will outline the immaturity of Claudio as well as the horrific manner in which Claudio treated Hero throughout the film. Furthermore, I will also outline how the aspect that people should never give up is shown in the short story The Fly. Finally I will discuss the struggle to be independent in The Captive Lion.…
“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…
Almost everything we do is related to our own good. Living things, like us, no matter where we come from, or where we develop, try to survive one way or another. It is the one part of our nature we cannot change. Survival requires selfishness, but also intelligence, that does not make it wrong. In certain situations, like the ones we read in the articles, it’s better to think about yourself, trust your instincts and take full advantage of your abilities, than to hesitate worrying about someone else’s well-being and end in a catastrophe.…
The reason why I chose to write about Nokugcina Mhlophe, it is because I like her work and stytle, because she was also involrd in fighting for freedom. I will be looking at her work in writing poetry. The inspiration that she gives out to young people. I was moved by her praise poem in honour of Nokukhanya Luthuli, widow of chief Albert Luthuli.…
