Analyzing The Poem 'My Papa's Waltz'

Decent Essays
The author interprets his experiences through imagery. For instance, in the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” in stanza 2 line 3 and 4 it says “We romped until the pans, Slid from the kitchen shelf,” and that describes a lot because romped means to play rough but why are they playing so rough that can make pans slide off the kitchen shelf? For instance the father was intoxicated and he hit the author and he made the pans slide off the kitchen shelf. Also in the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” in stanza 3 line 9 and 10 it says, “The hand that held my wrist, Was battered on one knuckle,” that is describing the father grabbing the author wrist and hitting him with his other hand as it says in stanza 3. It also says in the poem in stanza 4 line 13 it says ,”You

Although the feelings towards women’s rights were rapidly changing during the late twentieth century, not many women were able to have an opportunity to participate in the workplace. Olga Broumas’ “Cinderella” uses the contrast between a women’s want of a perfect fairytale ending and the struggle to make their own way in society to get across the underlying meaning of the women’s movement. Throughout the poem Broumas uses examples of how the women of that day were often shunned from these types of chances because they weren’t pretty, smart, or clever enough to fit a part that was deemed a “mans work”. The real significance of the poem is that on the surface, it’s building on the “Cinderella” story but really, it’s working in a figurative way…

As I began to read the poem “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke I could not help but to feel mad at the the person with the smell of whiskey on his breath. But halfway through the story I began to notice that some of the words like “waltzing”, “romped” seemed to contradict my negative reading of the poem. There are two contradicting images that are created by the poem and one can see a negative experience or a fun and enjoyable experience depending on the interpretation. But as I read the new critics interpretation “that connotes Physical control to the point of manipulation and even abuse on the father’s part”, I could not help but disagree because the poem makes sense if you believe that this poem is being described through the eyes of…

Continually Alone, Ever Seeking In poetry there are many literary devices and aspects of figurative language that influence different themes and how readers are able to interpret the meaning behind a specific poet’s literary work. Through these devices one may correctly interpret and understand the thoughts a writer is trying to convey by his or her words written on paper or listened to by a reader. One facet of figurative language that can be used to construct and identify a theme in a poem is the use of analogy. In Walt Whitman’s poem “A Noiseless Patient Spider” the analogy of the spider compared to the soul is the main type of figurative language used to develop structure, the theme of isolation, as well as the theme of wanting to make connections because of that isolation throughout Whitman’s lyrical work.…

When the reader first analyzes the poem, it naturally comes of as harsh or scary. The first thought that comes to mind is that the drunken father is abusing the child. Although after further analysis of the poem it seems as though that is not the case. Sometimes life is best explained in metaphors. Sometimes the hurt, pain, and anger found in life are more easily grasped when one looks at them in terms of other objects. Written in short and choppy lines with no clear rhythm or rhyming pattern, this poem tells the story of a man who witnessed his friend blown to pieces in a minefield. Because of this, the man who witnessed this terrifying tragedy has grown into an angry and broken soul.…
