Analyzing The Poem 'Choices'

Improved Essays
The poem “Choices” has all left something in our hearts, from the complicated words that it proposes from the twists of irony, tangled up in a knot; it either being a lesson, morale, etc. One part from this poem that I felt a link with was the second stanza, which stated, If i can't have/ what i want... then/ my job is to want/ what i've got/ and be satisfied/ that at least there/ is something/ more to want. To me this states that we should be satisfied by what we have, than what we desire. My situation relates to this situation perfectly. Personally, I am going through many struggles, as my dad has kidney issues, and our economic state is not the best. Nothing is really top tier in our home as well. But coming to live like this every single

kay, so now we know about timshel, but it's also Adam's last word before he dies (at least it wasn't something totally random like rosebud). He says it right after Lee gets him to give Cal his blessing, i.e. show that he loves him as a son and free him from the guilt of "killing" his brother. It's a moment where things are at a crossroads for Cal: he could go on hating himself for what he has done and thinking that his dad died hating his guts, or he can be free and go on to break the Cain-Abel curse that seems to follow the Trask family around. As Lee says to Adam, "Give him his chance"…

The choices you make in life can either lead you to great opportunities or leave you with deep regrets. It’s up to you to decide where you want to go, and how you are going to get there. A choice is the act of making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities. The possibilities may surpass your limits and get you far in life, or cause you to feel regretful and ashamed. In “Viva La Vida” and “The Road Not Taken” each author uses choices to portray similarities to “Peace Like A River” and how bad choices can affect you.…

Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…

People who tend to never have to go without tend to never worry about it ,but just as easy as you can come up , you can fall off and end up in the slumps just like any other person who was living right but fell off. The next time someone is struggling, or you start to take those things, like food, or having a place to sleep for granted, remember there are people all over who would feel lucky to sleep in a bed that is theirs. As well as coming home to a home cooked meal that you chose not to eat because it wasn’t what you asked for. Every day is a blessing, but it is also a blessed day when you wake up knowing you don’t have to…

According to Saint Lucian poet Derek Walcott, “The discontent that lies in the human condition is not satisfied simply by material things.” Throughout history it has been proven time and time again, that those who rely on material objects such as money, stature, and fortune, often find themselves in a place of dissatisfaction, and envy. These negative feelings occur for no good reason other than the fact that “material things” are just “things”, and have no real meaning or purpose. Concepts like meaningful relationships and empathy, two ideas that are needed to lead a happy and in some cases moral life, are concepts that people who focus solely on status, and riches often fail to understand. The idea of what happens when one has an intense…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

My father has struggled throughout his life but he doesn’t complain about anything. He works harder than anyone else I know, doing jobs that no one else would ever want to do, to support his family. My dad is currently working as a driver for Lowe’s, meaning he drives delivery trucks around the state, delivering refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and any other appliances that customers had bought. He wakes up at five in the morning to drive 40 miles to get to work, to get home at 9 o’clock at night. He carries refrigerators upstairs and downstairs almost every day so that he can support his family.…

Stories such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin, “The Hunters of Men”, and “Civil Disobedience” all have a connection with the fight to gain civil rights and equality. Much of that still carries on into the 21st century we live in today. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a woman takes matters into her own hands in order to save her child, showing her strength and bravery that many women in today's time possess as well. “The Hunters of Men”, a short story written by John Greenleaf Whittier, is considered to be a public attack on slave hunters. The public attacks against their government and the way people were treated didn't stop there, in “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau, Thoreau made sure to show that the people had more power over the government than they thought.…

In the poem “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins, the speaker of the poem is in a sort of teaching role as he/she speaks to what is assumed to be a class. The speaker gives instructions using imagery on how to enjoy and correctly examine a poem, but the class only wants to determine the meaning. The multiple uses of imagery describe how those being spoken to in the poem (and those reading the poem) are to explore, understand, and enjoy all poetry. Without the imagery that Collins applies in the poem, there would be no gateway for the meaning or the instructions that the speaker gives his/her class. The meaning that Collins intended the reader to take away from the poem is explained in the different uses of imagery that he applied.…
