In the play Machinal, the story revolves around the character of a young woman and how her life unfolds through the actions of others and as well as her own. The character in my opinion is in a way innocent and gullible by others actions. Within the second episode of the play, there is a conversation between the young woman and her mother that provokes this opinion. As the young woman speaks to her mother in a confrontational manner, but is easily provoked by her mother’s words. The young woman reveals to the mother that she had been asked for her hand in marriage, in which the mother offers mixed feelings. The mother says to the young woman “Vice-President! Hic income must be- Does he know you’ve got a mother to support”(Treadwell 105). These
