Analyzing The Messages In Tim O Brien's The Things They Carried

The Things They Carried were determined by the previous nights homework and classwork. Among the necessities were mechanical pencils, ballpoint pens, highlighters, math textbooks, binders, snacks and Poland spring water. All together the weight of these items would equate to six kilograms. Hamza, a very religious Muslim, couldn’t carry food like the other peers of this school since he was fasting thus, not being able to eat and drink until after sundown. Before fainting due to lack of fluids and food, Michael, who was very diligent and intelligent, was referred to as a “nerd”. He carried much more than the average classmate. For example, he carried more mechanical pencils, lead, books, and an unusual beverage called Red Bull. By necessity, …show more content…
Sam, with his Samsung Galaxy S8, received endless amounts of messages from a guy named Chris, a senior at a private Catholic school downtown. Sam referred to these messages as love messages, but Chris did not interpret it this way. During a boring and endless class period of social studies, Sam would take out his Galaxy S8 and grasp it tightly hoping for a response from Chris. Often, Sam would day dream about his smile or having conversations with him. However, the messages constructed by both Sam and Chris were never sensual. They were just teenagers complaining about school. But personally, to Sam, these messages had a deeper meaning and so the moments he shared with Chris were worthy to be remembered, even if he valued them as something they were not. Since Sam is constantly thinking about Chris, he did not put much effort into paying attention to what is going on in class. For example, he would daydream about being with Chris and having deep conversations about topics such as nature and livelihood. With all of Sam’s daydreams, he would be interrupted and brought back to reality due to the loud noise of the school bell.
