The biggest challenge had to face when it came to writing was in my senior year of high school. During the summer of my senior year we had to read this called the “The Mis-Education of the Negro” by Carter G. Woodson. I thought this was just going to be another read and reflect paper, but it turn out to be a 5 page analysis. We had to break down the book chapter by chapter and explain how the book relates to today’s society. The reason why this was challenging because I couldn’t understand the language that the author was using. Another challenging problem I had to face was the ability to write a 5 page paper because at the time I was not used to writing a 5 page book review, plus I didn’t know how to start my paper off correctly, because

In Peg Tyre’s article, The Writing Revolution, Tyre analyzes the quality of education in a New York high school and discovers the problem with education in today’s society. New Dorp High School on Staten Island was known for their reputation for poor education, low graduation rate, and high drop out rate. In spring of 2007 four of every ten students starting as a freshmen dropped out from New Dorp (Tyre, 1; 2012). After discussion between the principal and the faculty the staff concluded that the reason for the crisis was that the students were simply bad writers. Starting in 2009, New Dorp put their primary focus into writing, not only in English, but also in all core subjects.…

Inside America's Most Dangerous Year Round Job It was just before 9:00 on a rainy Autumn morning as I drove up the muddy gravel drive of Baker Logging on the outskirts of Manchester, Tennessee. The outside of the green metal building appeared fairly new, as I walked in, I noticed the smell of lumber faded to a mixture of grease and pumpkin spice candles. It was almost as chilly inside as it was outside, only dry. The desk was full of paperwork and behind it sat Mr.Baker. He appeared almost as I had pictured him, only cleaner.…

A series of small waves pressed the sail boat against the alge dock as his cold and cracked hands desperately yanked on the rope in an effort to raise the sails. Dark clouds had moved in the night before and had stayed overnight providing a refreshing sprinkle of rain every now and then. He looked out over the vast plain of unsettled water and saw one individual white cap rise up among the rest only to be pushed back down. Due to the lack of sunlight the frigid water appeared black and lifeless but he knew that below it was a complex community of different species. He then bent over the side of the boat and reached for its securing ropes.…

Academics has also been something that I have struggled with in the past especially when it comes to writing. In 2004 I was diagnosed with dyslexia and on a scale to 1-10 I was probably at a 9 to how bad I it was. I had no idea how to write. Slowly with the help of many I eventually got the foundation of how to write a simple essay, but its still something I will always struggle with. I would consider myself a very creative person, however when it comes to research papers and stuff of that sorts you might be better off looking at a blank piece of paper because its probably will be better then any essay I write.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

My writing isn’t nearly as advanced as I would like it to be, and this is mostly because I don’t write on my free time. I only ever sit down to write when I need to for an assignment or if it is something for work, however, I do occasionally make journal entries, but it is very rare. Even though I don’t write very often, when I do, it isn’t that hard. I ranked myself a six on challenged to gifted writer because I don’t find writing a challenge, but I am not that great at it either. On the other scales I put myself down as a five.…
