Gary Soto’s vivid imagery and religious allusions recreate an event where sin and guilt leads him to reflect upon his actions as a six-year-old child. In the beginning of A Summer Life, Gary Soto reveals that he has a religious background by quoting that “he knew enough about hell” and that he “was holy in almost every bone”. In addition to his religiously influenced statements, he also states “angels flopping”. The recurrence of allusions from the bible in the introductory passage emphasizes that Soto knew about God and therefore, the consequences of sin even at a young age.…

So I finally settled on the poem “The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver. The overall theme of the poem has the meaning of nature and finding one’s self. I found this poem to be enticing because the whole idea of figuring out who you are is the epitome of life and a crucial part of everyone’s lives. Oliver begins the poem with three rhetorical questions. These questions increase in specific detail order.…

Bob Marley has once said, “the sun is shining, the weather is sweet. Its makes you want to move you’re dancing feet”. The humidity, temperature and hours of sunshine have the greatest effect on mood, which has been evidently shown in Ray Bradbury short story. In "All Summer in a Day", the mood of the characters switch constantly due to jealously of losing the remembrance of the sun, the emotional impact with the sun's presence, and the regret of restricting one to see the rare occasion of the sun making an appearance. This proves to show that weather can often have immense affect one's behaviour and emotions.…

Throughout Jean Rouch’s filmic career he experiments with cinema, pushing the boundaries of ethnographic film, showcasing a range of styles. Chronicle of a Summer embarks on the simple journey of asking strangers if they are happy in order to explore how camera’s change behavior. This film epitomizes Rouch’s exploration of cinematic truth, however, I am left questioning if it is the camera or Rouch who provokes his subjects into performance. Rouch’s exploratory career can be tracked through his two films, Les Maitres Fous and Moi, un Noir, released only 3 years apart but very different, displaying his adventurous, transformative filmic style. Compared to many other ethnographers, Rouch is not concerned with capturing the reality of the lives…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…

Throughout the Romantic Era, literature, particularly poetry, began to encaptivate the sublime within nature and poets were drawn to vivid and imaginative descriptions of the natural world. Following this period of innovation, Emily Dickinson arose and through a distinctive meter and form, took continued to integrate ideas of nature into poetry. Dickinson took a more realist approach and wrote with a unique individuality which while unpopular at the time, now stands as some of America’s most celebrated poetry. Mary Oliver, a renowned contemporary poet weaves similar themes of love, hope, immortality, and religion with flora and fauna imagery through minimalistic, free-verse poetry. Her free-verses largely resemble Dickinson’s brief yet moving…

My mood was jubilant that day because I was glad I came to that performance instead of staying home. I would have felt home sick with all that final review so it was pleasant and peaceful having entertainment for such a low cost but great performance. The movements I identified were a lot of the terms I went over in dance class from degage to grand battement, the list goes all over. The name of the performance should be called “The Art of Adventure” and it should be divided into subgenres which focuses on the main theme adventure. Adventure can be dim or bright but they always seem to have a long lasting well produced ending.…
