In this current time of turbulence, one could do worse than to look to Henry David Thoreau 's "Civil Disobedience" as a guide for finding a voice for one’s grievances. We are currently experiencing an era of political, cultural, and social upheaval, as witnessed in scenarios ranging from violence in the Middle East to Hillary Clinton’s actions in Benghazi, We are now, more than ever, in need of a solid methodology for personifying individual outcries. If we protest in an aggressive manner, it is considered unacceptable and we will not get an ear to listen to us. Thoreau provided us with food for thought; he gave us his ideas on "Civil Disobedience,"which should guide our actions. Withstanding the test of time, the ideas presented in this…

It is disheartening to hear about this in the news, but I am proud of the women who are brave enough to speak out. It makes me think about the recent #metoo movement and how it can be empowering to be honest about your experiences. I was proud when my own mother and several of my friends partook in the #metoo movement. I aspire to one day be brave enough to do the same.…

When 18-year-old American actress and singer Ariel Winter posted a picture to Instagram of her and her nieces in which she was wearing a two-piece swimsuit, she received a barrage of hateful comments on the social media website and application, most of which suggested that she was “asking for it” and that contained derogatory words such as “slut” in reference to her attire (Kimble). Winter’s experience is simply one of many such instances on the social photo sharing application and website Instagram, where women are consistently “slut shamed” for the pictures they post of themselves. Slut shaming is defined as the notion where a woman’s reputation and representation is studied closely as a form of discipline through the codes of sexual conduct…

Sexual harassment has always been, and still is, an extremely controversial topic. Some people tend to think that sexual harassment cases are all stemmed from lies made up by victims to gain attention or sympathy. Others, however, see sexual harassment as a serious crime that has been locked away in a vault and ignored by society. Whichever side one takes, the fact that sexual harassment and sexual discrimination laws play an important part in many aspects of society still stands. From the beginning of time, humans have struggled in deciding what rights certain groups should or should not have, and, slowly, everyone started to be set upon the same plane.…
