“Love You Forever” Literary Analysis
One of my favorite stories to read to my daughter is “Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch. The story is about a mother who sneaks into her son’s room, once he is sleeping, and sings a song to him. She sings to him these words “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be (pg. 14).” My favorite part about this story is that once her son is a teenager, and even a grown adult, she still sneaks into his room and sings her song to him.
The song she sings says she will like him for always really hits home for me as a mother to a toddler. Throughout the book, she recalls upon moments that her son made her crazy …show more content…
He lives in his own home across town. She calls her son and lets him know that she is very sick and needs him. He goes to her house, the same house he grew up in. Once he gets there, he goes up the stairs to her bedroom. He stops and stands at the top of the stairway for a moment. I think he is just trying to prepare himself to see his mom so sick. He finally goes into her room.
Her walls were covered in out dated wall paper and old photographs. She had a framed picture of her son as a baby and a few of him throughout his childhood. She also had a photo of herself as a young woman hanging above her bed. Her night stand was broken down and held up a very old looking lamp. It seemed she has been too sick to do much or change much of anything.
She looked so small and tiny like she was crippling. When he came to her side she was in bed wearing just a simple gown. Her hair was grayed and her face was all wrinkled. All she wanted to do that day was sing her song to her son one last time. I believe it was her last dying wish. So, she began to try singing. She barely gets two words out and her son realizes that she is just too old and sick to continue on with the rest. He scoops her up into his arms. He sits down in her rocking chair. She rested her tiny little hand over his heart. She reminded me of a baby or small child in that …show more content…
He looks down at his mother cradled in his arms and knows she has just moments left to live. His mother who had always called him her baby was now cradled into his arms like a baby. Their roles have reversed. He was once the one being assured he was safe and loved. He was the one she had assured over the years everything was going to be ok. Now, he must do the same for his mother. He wants her to be comforted in her last moments. He needs to show her that she is loved and safe and that everything was going to be ok. He knew what he needed to do.
He begins to rock her and sings to her song to her. Although, he just changes just one word. He sings “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my Mommy you’ll be (pg. 28).” Her face was glowing and she was smiling. His face was blank as he knew his mother was dying. He was not crying. I believe he just wanted to stay calm and comfort his mommy in her last moments. I could tell from the illustrations, by Sheila McGraw, that he was just pushing through the
