Round 1: In Raymond Carver’s “Signals,” a couple is having difficult time being together. The reader can easily tell that the relationship is nearing its end. At the same time, the couple is very hesitant about separating. Wayne doesn’t want to give up, but he is leaving things unsaid. He prevents himself from saying what is on his mind. An example of this is when they were talking about Wayne making more of an effort and she said it was his choice. He said that wasn’t true, then retracted his words by saying he didn’t know why he said that. Caroline is getting tired of Wayne not speaking his mind and she has also become very restless. The reader is taken through her life and it seems pretty normal with the one sad event being the death of Andy. This story is about, like “Signals,” a change that the main …show more content…
Sammy quit his job for these girls. To have him go out and look for them as well would make Sammy’s character seem even more desperate for their attention. It would dampen his integrity even more so. Sammy’s character already seemed liked he wasn’t expecting those girls to wait for him in the published version and to have him go out and look for them would change an aspect of him. I personally think the show “The Beverly Hillbillies” are in a way exploiting white stereotypes. They are showcasing a family from the country moving into a lavish educated society. The show plays on the perception of white trash society, such as rednecks or hillbillies. Although the show is done for comedy purposes, it does capitalize on stereotypes within society. In the book Dean mentions, “Even critics who enjoy the show do so from a crouched defensive posture” which is regarding to another popularized hillbilly show, Honey Boo Boo, but showcases the feelings audiences may be feeling.…

In “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin (1894), “A&P” by John Updike (1986), and “Proof” by David Auburn (2001) each story uses symbolism to communicate a deeper idea than they actually write. They use objects, actions, and characters to give more meaning to the thing itself. In these stories the characters, objects and surroundings symbolize something of a deeper meaning.…
