Analyzing Political Cartoons

Recently there have been many controversial issues such as gay marriage, immigration, and police brutality. However, I chose a political cartoon regarding President Trump and the press because there have been many issues on that matter. The cartoon I selected was drawn by Randy Bish and it portrays the president as a dog and the media as a fire hydrant and in the illustration the dog is urinating on the fire hydrant that has words that read “freedom of the press”. I believe that the author is stating that the new laws the president is trying to create will restrict the media to the point that they will violate their freedom of speech as a whole. The cartoon is effective because it summarizes what is happening currently with the president and the press while still being comical by portraying the matter as an everyday occurrence. In recent events, this issue has made controversial news because President Trump has proposed to make new laws that will make it stricter for the press to publish articles. Trump wants to make it conceivable for people to sue the press “if someone says something wrong” (Borchers). The president argues that the press defames numerous individuals and in most cases it’s on purpose therefore, he proposed that …show more content…
Thus, I believe the dog urinating is a metaphor saying that trump is basically disrespecting the media and doing whatever he pleases regardless of the amendment that protects them. Then, the dog has a tie because it relates to the business side of the controversy where people argue that trump has a conflict of interest in wanting to limit the media’s powers. In addition, the author effectively uses irony to further inform the communities on the matter because it relates to the recent events of the media being disregarded and not being able to accurately do their

The author of this political cartoon is David Horsey. He usually does political cartoons and for this specific one, he purposely chooses his audience that belong to everyday average parents, teachers, and gun loving patriots all the while persuading them of his opinion by using rhetorical words and images. The comic itself displays how he feels on gun control, and how little security the public is allowed to have for themselves whether it be concealed or otherwise. How the comic is formatted to look and the culture also greatly affect his work. The cartoon’s main figure ( Sarah Palin) also believes that gun control could easily leave millions of people defenceless in the U.S., which given with the several who seek to brutalize Americans such as Terrorists, crazed gun-men, and even random psychos .…

THE MEDIA DECLARING WAR AGAINST AMERICA. At least according to Trump’s headlines it is. On February eighteenth Frida Ghitis published her article: Why Trump wants you to hate the media on the CNN website; the article does lives true to it’s title. Ghitis expresses her own take on President Trump’s assessment of media being the true public enemy in comparative allusions, personification, and mocketive diction. “Don’t look at me” Trump’s script “cries out”, begging the audience to look in another direction claiming that there is a “threat, a danger.”…

The article that I have chosen is ‘Unbelievable Turmoil’: Trump’s First Month Leaves Washington Reeling. This article talks about some of the issues that President Trump had encountered in his first month on the job. Some issues that he has had to deal with were his travel ban and firing his acting attorney general. It also voices the concern of a Democrat about President Trumps ability to respond if there was a major crisis that happened.…

At a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, the President called journalists "liars" and "sick people" who are fomenting "division" in the country and "trying to take away our history and our heritage." And he repeatedly portrayed the news media as an enemy of the American people, recalling his claims to that effect from February. "I really think they don't like our country. Within society, it is often difficult to distinguish what is actually true versus what is created and projected to the masses. With a successful campaign, there is no easy way to tell if it is deceiving or not and most of the time, people are easily subjected to taking campaigns for reality. This can be seen in the film Wag the Dog. It is a fictitious film that deals with the ways in which the media and government work together to fabricate news and distract the public from other matters (Wag the Dog, 1997). The film essentially focuses on the how the media and government work together to cover up a presidential sex scandal days before the election by creating a war (Wag the Dog, 1997).…

In a September 2015 cartoon from The Columbus Dispatch, Nate Beeler addresses the issue of finding a new Speaker of the House after John Boehner’s recent resignation. The point of this cartoon is to display the difficulty of finding someone fit for this grueling job. Many of the House Republicans are in disarray, having forced out John Boehner, and now watching Kevin McCarthy, the expected successor to Boehner, retract his interest in the job. Beeler employs several strategies in order to present a strong argument in his cartoon.…

The newspaper said that they were protected by the First Amendment; but the Supreme Court ruled that lies are not protected under the First Amendment. I think this ruling sets precedent for what is covered under the First Amendment when it comes to false claims. It really helped with ruling in the Abel Fields case because Abel Fields claimed that he was protected under the First Amendment; but in the case of New York Times Co. v. Sullivan it shows that lies are not protected under the First…

Politics is a controversial phenomenon, particularly in the way it has harnessed the media to influence public opinion. Representations of politics now cannot avoid inclusion of media which predominately conveys the inescapable message of politics Representations give the perceiver a clear view on whether the shadowed meaning brings out the best or worst of human nature. In any society media should use its capacity for representation to inform the people, but in the contemporary society, politics seem to have woven its way into the field. This illustrates that media is not a true representation of society, following as it does, the road that politics paves for them. The widely used service which is known to both reach and influence is created using a process: which include the use of censorship and manufacturing consent.…

The intended message of my cartoon is that trickle down economy is not guaranteed to work. The GOP can not force the rich to spend more by giving them tax breaks, so there is no guarantee that it is going to trickle down to the people with less money. I used the example of a teacher and students to portray the message of my cartoon. Teachers always tell young children that “sharing is caring”, but a lot of the time the children do not end up sharing the toy. I titled my political cartoon “TRICKLE DOWN” in case people did not get the analogy through the drawing.…
