Analyzing Paulbeck's Graduation Speech

For this week’s assignment I chose to watch the commencement address delivered by CLA graduate Mike Paulbeck in 2015. I thought his speech tied in very well to the “laying a foundation for the future” theme. Matt Paulbeck in his speech talked a lot about how the University of Minnesota will prepare you for what comes next in life. In effect you are laying the foundation at the University of Minnesota so you will be successful in the future. Another impactful statement during the speech was when he referenced a quote by Haruki Murakami. The quote by Haruki Murakami stated, "I can

Pearson’s speech on the inauguration of the new Canadian flag was very patriotic and sensitive to the Canadian people. Pearson used several phrases to achieve his goal of persuading Canadians to be proud of their new flag, such as when he refers to the, “deep and equal pride that all Canadians will feel…” (52-53), or when he speaks of how the “Maple Leaf Flag will become a symbol of…unity in our country without which one cannot grow in strength and purpose” (37-38). Pearson repeats the theme of ‘pride’ and ‘unity’ throughout his speech as he lists qualities the new Canadian flag will symbolize for its citizens saying “May the land over which this new Flag flies remain united in freedom and justice; a land of decent God-fearing people; fair…

Today, June 18th, 2017, marks the last day of my first week of college at Paul Quinn College and I am proud to say, “I survived”. Committing to Paul Quinn was a really big decision for me because this school is a 17 hour drive away from my home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. I was afraid that I might get homesick or that I would not have the support of my family because I would be so far away from home. Soon, after visiting the Dallas campus, I realized that Paul Quinn was the school for me. This is the school where I will grow as an individual and I have come to that realization in my first week of college through the many conversations with upperclassmen, faculty, alumni and summer bridge students.…

Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

From the beginning of recorded history, speeches have a tendency to be influential as they connect with their audience and illicit a specific thought or emotion. Continuing this custom, writer David Foster Wallace delivered his compelling commencement speech aptly titled, “Commencement Speech,” to an audience of students at Kenyon College in 2005. His purpose is to make the audience aware of our ‘default-setting’ of thinking. His ability to connect with his audience via word choice and the examples of everyday life he provides, proves his speech to be effective.…

When comparing the commencement speech given by Steve Jobs at Stanford University in 2005 to the commencement speech given by Barak Obama at Wesleyan University in 2008, one can argue that Steve Jobs’ address has a stronger use of the rhetorical situation and the rhetorical appeals. Jobs’ ability to combine ethos, pathos and purpose proves his credibility, builds a relationship with the audience, and helps students believe in their intuitions. In his 2005 commencement address to Stanford University, Steve Jobs incorporates ethos to prove his credibility to his audience. He begins by admitting that “[he] never graduated from college” (1).…

Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
