Introduction Herbert Hoover is often seen as a faulty president, but is there truth behind this statement? One can find that out by looking into his early life, professional life, the presidency, and legacy.
Early Life Herbert Clark Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa. His father was Jesse Clark Hoover, the towns blacksmith, and his mother's name was Hulda Hoover, the town's teacher. His mother was very intelligent. Everyone wanted her to speak during the town meetings. Hoover’s religion was the society of friends or Quakers. His dad died when he was six, and his mom died when he was nine. Hoover, his little sister, Mary, his older brother, and Theodore moved around a lot, but final landing in Organ to live with his uncle. In school, Hoover failed all of his classes, except math. He wanted to go to Stanford. The recruiter for Stanford saw Hoover’s grades and said he could go, but he would have to take multiple summer courses, to get him caught up with all of the rest of his classes. When Harding became President, he offered his choice of Cabinet posts. Hoover chose to serve as Secretary of Commerce. The Secretary of Commerce is the head of the United States Commerce. Commerce is buying and selling, especially on a large scale. Commerce includes legal, economic, political, social, cultural, and technological systems that are in operation in any country. The Secretary of Commerce is also kinda like the teachers in a way. They help the people like the president when they are confused. Hoover was the Secretary of Commerce twice. Once in 1921-1923 under president Harding and again in 1923-1928 under President Coolidge. He raised millions of dollars for food and medicine to help the desperate Belgians.
