I did not use ‘um’ as much as I did in the first PHI, however I continued to say ‘so’ throughout both PHI’s. In fact, I used ‘so’ twice in two sentences. I think I use ‘so’ to give me a moment to clarify my thoughts. I could improve this by really thinking about what I say before I say it. Another thing I would like work on is sitting still. A few times throughout the video I was fidgeting in my chair and moving my head in different positions. I do not want my client to feel as if my fidgeting is an indicator that I am bored with the session or that I am eager to end the session. Another thing I would like to work on is being more concise in my reflections, inquiries, and summaries. Many times throughout the session I was nervous and began to ramble. I could have effectively gotten my point across without the added fillers or continuation of a sentence. For example, in statement 25 I repeated my question twice which was not necessary. Another example is in statement 18, I continued rambling but if I had been more concise it would have been a better reflection of content and feelings. I have many things I could work on to improve my helping skills and plan to continue

The story “Mess” by John Hollander is interesting take on the concept on cleanliness and how the human mind perceives it. Hollander starts out his essay by giving an example of how different people react to a mess. He refers to the subjects as X and Y. He states that what may seem messy to X, could be perfectly neat and orderly to Y. Hollander even goes as far to say that if Y had a pile a books, and X arranged all the books into a neat stack, the neat stack could appear to be utter chaos to Y. After this profound example, the article continues to go on and list all the different kind of messes that exist in our lives. Hollander breaks the messes into different categories such as outdoor messes, indoor messes, personal states, and personal appearance messes.…

Upon completing interview one and two, I surmise that interviewing is not as easy as it appears. Whether it be asking questions to a stranger, friend, or a family member, there are still levels of discomfort because my role changes. I am no longer their friend who can talk in a causal manner, I have to contemplate and decide what questions to ask and how to prevent boundary violations. With friends and family, I often do not perceive this and conversations are more lenient. It was difficult to provide reflection without sounding hypercritical or appearing apathetic.…

Introduction The purpose of this report is for me to develop critical awareness and self-reflection of core social welfare competencies experienced while volunteering with the Healthy Living for Seniors Program (HLSP). The HLSP is a UnitingCare community day program for people over the age of 65 years thus the field of practice is “aged care” (Chenoweth & McAuliffe 2012, p. 141). The program is designed to support the health and wellbeing of their clients through a focus on social participation, independence and their quality of life (UnitingCare Ageing 2015). The first thing I noticed in my video is that I say “umm” way too often. The first time I said, “umm” in my speech was at 0:10 and continued to say it throughout my whole entire speech. I found it quite annoying when listening to myself. It is my go to word when I am nervous and it is something I really need to work on. The second thing I noticed is that I don’t look professional when giving my speech because instead of standing up straight and tall, I lean to the side and kind of stick my hip out.…

Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…

This was reinforced by feedback I received which said “you seemed slightly nervous at first but then as confidence grew the teaching became increasingly better.” I felt this was due to a lack of preparation and could have easily been resolved by practice and repetition. Also, next time I will prepare some notes to prompt me and to ensure I do not forget to mention any important details the students may…
