Decent Essays
In Chapter 6, the author presents a picture of a sculpture of the Last Judgment carved by Gislebertus located in the west entrance at the church of Saint Lazarus at Autun in France. This realistic carved sculpture represent Christian believe of the return of Jesus Christ to earth to judge the living and dead. In the center of the sculpture there is the image of Jesus, to the right are angels helping the soul of the good to heaven and to the left demons pushing the soul of the wicket to hell. In the medieval times Christian saw good as being holly and saints, and wackiness was the result of desire and greed. Therefore, as Christian enters the church the caved sculpture reminded to them of the consequence they will face for committing sin.

Analyzing Art Work by Different Artists from Different Periods Art is very important to people especially when it represents spirituality. It adds a strong connection between the artist and the viewers on something they both agree on. Art in the early Renaissance was mostly about spirituality, but as time passes by, artists paid less attention to spirituality, and they started adding other themes to art. I intend to show that The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, represents the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. Da Vinci has depicted the horror in the 12 disciples’ faces when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.…

Preacher Jonathan Edwards was able to give a sermon that greatly impacted others. Despite his monotonous voice and actions, he was able to strike fear into the hearts of many Puritans, solely through his diction and elaborate use of imagery. The figurative language present throughout his speech could have been represented in several ways, including an image based on his descriptions of the human relationship with God. There were many sketches that illustrated the speech by Jonathan Edwards very well; however, one sketch in particular accurately brought the speech to life.…

Throughout the years, many have wondered how the depiction of Christ's crucifixion has changed from the early medieval era to the late medieval, roughly the time span from about c. 400-1500. It can be said that, during the medieval time period, Christ’s life was an important theme, especially that of His death on the cross. During the Roman time period, crucifixion was the essential and most gruesome way to punish one who had committed crime(s). However, with that being said, it is interesting to see how the crucifixion has been depicted in art, especially when comparing it to earlier and later images within the medieval time period. In order to understand how Christ’s crucifixion has changed from the early medieval era to the late medieval,…

The book Inferno was a very interesting book. It truly showed the poetic side of ancient history. It also conveys many of the system theories but it is more focused on Hierarchy, Trade/Communication, and Political/Social. The Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, also known as the Arena Chapel, was completed in 1305. The inside of the chapel is decorated with frescoes that were painted by Giotto, an italian painter from Florence. These frescoes illustrate some scenes from the lives of Mary, her parents, Anna and Joaquim, and Christ. Allegorical figures of virtues and their opposing vices and a scene of the final judgement are also portrayed in the frescoes that decorate the chapel. The patron of the chapel, Enrico Scrovegni, dedicated the chapel to the virgin of Charity as penance.…

Seven wedge-like shapes can be seen surrounding a portrait of Christ, who is displaying his wounds to the viewer, a ring of light encompasses around Christ and radiates out. Within the corners of the canvas are perfectly circular images depicting the “four last things”, Heaven, Hell, the Last Judgement and finally death. When viewed in its entirety the composition is revealed to be the eye of God; giving the viewer the impression that God is ever-watching. The wedge-like shapes demonstrate within them each sin; some which can be easily identified, the iconography being obvious and tame, another indication that this could potentially be an early work of Bosch, as it is a strong contrast to what has become synonymous with Bosch’s work who is widely credited with being the first surrealist with his depictions of bizarre creatures and strange…

Throughout history, the concept of gates provides evocative imagery concerning the ideas of Heaven and Hell, limbo and private quarters. These works are physical manifestations of grand stories, and social barriers. The enormous size and various interpretations of these works, through religious, social or historical context, create a sense of judgment. It begs the question: who and what is allowed to physically and mentally pass these gates? Still, some objects don’t possess a definitive answer as to what they are judging, such as Emile Robert’s Pair of Gates, which feature a butterfly motif.1 In Christian art, the butterfly’s life stages represent the life, death and…

French Romanesque incorporates a classical style with medieval and Roman influence. Gothic sculptures although beautiful portrayed a decline in the traditional style, yet still included some Roman influence such as draped robes on sculptures. I favored French Romanesque style with emphasis given to Gislebertus’ Last Judgment. The Last Judgment sculpture depicts both aspects of the religious culture: heaven, hell, good, and evil. The statue possesses intricate detail of the human figure as well as angels and demons balancing out the souls who pass on to heaven and those who will be damned.…

The Crucified Christ (1503-04) is a classical example of Italian Renaissance art. The piece illustrates, extremely effectively the Italian desire to make everything in which they paint beautiful, not matter how horrific the subject may be. Christ in this depiction, although, dead does not appear to have progressed into rigor mortis of any degree, Christ also appears to look peace in death in the Raphael painting, unlike in the Grunewald where distress is on Christ’s face is blatant. The way in which Christ is bleeding in Raphael’s piece is depicted with a degree of beauty, the bleeding is not messy, any blood coming from Christ, is delicately dripping into chalices held by angels on either side of Christ. This is a complete contrast with that of Grunewald’s depiction of the crucifixion, where blood is freely flowing down both his arms and legs.…

1120-1135, made of marble and 25 feet wide at its base depicts the souls of the deceased in line awaiting judgment from God (Kleiner, 2012). The sculpture portrays men with traveling baggage, whom are identified as pilgrims to Jerusalem who will be favored and have a place in heaven (Kleiner, 2012). The Last Judgment sculpture also portrays Christ presiding over the separation of those going to heaven and those going to hell, as well as an angel blowing a trumpet to announce the coming of the lord and another angel boosting the blessed into heaven (Kleiner, 2012). This stone sculpture is designed to frighten individuals guilty of sin to influence them toward changing their lives and finding salvation within the lord and the church (Kleiner, 2012). Gislebertus’s Last Judgment sculpture communicates both aspects of the era’s religious beliefs including the weighing of souls between demons and angels (Kleiner, 2012).…

As in image 27 and 28 the Good Samaritan Window, and the Rose Window and Lancets, North Transept, Chartres Cathedral, the stain glass windows are representations of Christ and Kings and Queens. Although the windows in cathedrals in the 12th and 13th century are more descriptive in telling stories, portraying allegory of sin and salvation, and Mary and Jesus’ heritage, the Monastery in Indiana still provides momentous pieces of art (506). Though several other specifications are gathered in comparing 19th to 20th century Monastery in Indiana to Early Medieval, Gothic, and Romanesque art, I found in images 20,10,16,17,15,18,27, and 28 to be to the most interesting and comparative. The multiple architectures portray depth, meaning, significance, and even provoke spirituality.…
