The theme of a story is it's over all feeling and tone. It is the entire story, essay, poem or whatever piece of literature is being analyzed. A theme is how the piece feels to the individual reader. For example Edgar Allen Poe's work before he passed away had a terrifying tone. He did this by writing pieces like "The Raven". This was incredibly popular and mostly scared little children. Other pieces like children books Have a peaceful tone like their untouched by the world around them. My favorite was this one spider man book he defeated a different villain each day of the week. And it had an exciting but primal theme. I probably wouldn't like it today but it was very entertaining when i was like 7. Some pieces seem like they don't have a
