The poem I selected is “The Raven” written by popular American writer, Edgar Allan Poe. I chose this poem because of the pass experiences that I had with Edgar Allan Poe’s literary pieces. I remember in 7th grade when I had a teacher named Mrs. Scalici. She introduced the whole class to a short story called “The Tell Tale Heart”, which is one of Poe’s most famous pieces. The poem was very good, I liked how the poem was gory, detailed, and interesting. It went perfectly for the season, which was October. Soon after we were done reading the poem, the whole grade went on a class trip. There we saw live performances of several of Poe’s short stories and poems being performed by actors. It was fun and the actors were very talented and they captured …show more content…
The poem begins with the narrator reading a book at his house. While he reads he fights the urge to not fall asleep, but he fails numerous times. He is reading the books to stop thinking about his love, Lenore; even though they are no longer together. As he is all alone in the house, he hears someone at the door and answers politely and then comes outside and finds that no one there. He is afraid and scared, and fears that the worst might happen. He tries to calm himself and starts thinking about harmless things it could be. Such as thinking that it could just be the wind, or that it's all in his head that the sound could have simply been a branch from the tree. He opens the window and a Raven flies inside. The narrator starts acting crazy and tries having a conversation with the bird. He asked it questions, such as “ what is your name “. And the Raven can talk, and it replies “nevermore”. The keeps asking more and more ridiculous questions, but he soon learns that is the only word the bird can say. The questions he ask reveal to the readers that they are personal and painful. The more he talks to the bird the crazier he gets throughout the …show more content…
He loved to write short stories and poems and loved critiquing them too. And is particularly fond of the spooky and eerie genre. He is known as a genius and an inspiration when it comes to literature. He was born in Boston and at the age of 1 his father left him, at 2 his mother died. Thus, he became an orphan; he was then separated from his siblings and was adopted by John and France's Allan. He became very close to France, but not so much with John. They lived in Richmond, Virginia. Where money has been always an issue making life very difficult for his family. He went to the University of Virginia in 1826, but didn't finish school due to his debt. After that, he went back home, and arrived to upsetting news. His neighbor/ fiancée Elmira Royster was engaged to another person. Poe was very upset with this news and separated from the Allan household and stopped seeing the second father. In 1830 Poe had received a place in the US Military Academy at West Point, and then joined the Army. He wasn't that good at being an officer cadet, though. So, he later realized that he would be much better suited for poetry instead. From 1831 to 1835, he stayed in Baltimore with his aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter Virginia. Where he would later sinfully marry his 13 year old cousin in 1836. Virginia inspired many of Poe’s literary projects. Poe began working as a poet and critic

When the narrator screams at the bird, asking what it wants and where it came from, the raven replied with “Nevermore” (Poe 48), which is the first time the bird speaks and it terrifies the narrator. In The Philosophy of Composition, he shows the techniques and the plan he used in the writing of the poem cited above. First of all, he says that before the beginning of the writing, the writer must already have in mind the denouement, which is, according to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, the exciting last part of a story or play. In addition, he says that just with the denouement constantly in view that the writer can give a plot its indispensable air of consequence , by making the incidents, and tone at all points.…
