The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, now located on West 55th Street and 9th Avenue in New York City, traces its roots to a choreographer who interwove modern dance, jazz, and African rhythms in creations such as Revelations. A spectacular work that audiences have been worshiping for almost fifty…
Vaslav Nijinsky, the choreographer, was told by audience members that his choreography did not embody what ballet actually was. The audience did not understand Nijinsky’s choreography. He was trying to embody the awkward movements that may have came from a primitive society. The jumping, stomping, and shaking was to show the terror the people of the society felt about the sacrifice. Some of the dancers claimed that the choreography felt unnatural to perform.…
“Training as the medium through which”, chapter 3, written by Melanie Bales is a chapter that is written on the theme of self-discovery and how as dancers we could apply the ideas to ourselves. Melanie Bales is a professor at Ohio State where she graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy. Bales also studied at the Joffrey School and was a Harkness Ballet Trainee. Throughout this article, I experienced different things for myself when going through and reading each section. A lot of references that were stated in the book allowed me to see dance through a whole new perspective.…
The Harlem Dancer is a short poem that focuses on a woman’s beauty and a scene inside a bar. The title indicates that the location of the bar is in Harlem which was considered a common place during the Harlem Renaissance. McKay has also described the woman in this poem to be a young, black prostitute and he observes the impact that she has towards the crowd. After a while the speaker notices that the dancer is unhappy due to the lack of respect she is getting from the audience. He incorporates the themes such as sex, youth, and promiscuity to successfully create the effects of an audience’s prejudice on the Harlem dancer, who suffers from cruel misinterpretations.…
John Ortiz is a recent a graduate from a highly touted dance academy. In his last semester at the academy, one of his instructors was interested in what had driven her students to find their passion in dance. So to find out she gave an assignment for each student to write a paper on how they fell in love with dance. In John’s case, falling in love with dance seemed as likely as the Cleveland Browns ever winning the Super Bowl. Growing up John was never the most slender kid.…
When these push and pull correlate, some things do not go into effect that is supposed to. The theme of pushing and pulling in the dance occurs throughout its entirety and challenging those normative views people have in watching a dance live or on…
Di Orio, Laura. “College Dance: Is It for Me?” Dance Informa Magazine, 7 Oct. 2015, www.danceinforma.com/2015/10/05/college-dance-is-it-for-me/. In her article, “College Dance: Is It for Me?” (2016), Laura Di Orio argues that going to college to study dance is important and useful, but that it is not the path for everyone.…
The school auditorium is filled with proud parents and the glow of several hundred screens poised to capture the moment their precious stars take the stage. The music starts and a dozen little girls and boys start twirling and craning their necks to watch their dance instructor coach them from the wings. Most of their parents aren't concerned with the dance training their children are receiving. A friend of a friend told them about "Dolly Dinkle's Dance Academy" and so they signed little Susie up,bought her a pink leotard, and told her to have fun at dance class. However, "Dolly Dinkle" is not a qualified dance instructor.…
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens, NY, I had a small voice and I still do. I was insecure about talking and speaking, especially in public. However, when I danced, I felt heard. Dance helps me express myself and instills love and confidence in my personal and professional life. It’s where I found my sense of place and power in this racially and socioeconomically charged world.…
On April 15th I viewed “Carnival of the Animals”- a collaboration between the Arkansas Philharmonic and the Northwest Arkansas Ballet Theatre. The performance featured several different styles and types of performing arts, including acting, dancing, and a symphony. I also noticed several different things whilst viewing this program that heavily influenced my overall assessment. When I first walked into the Arend Arts Center, I noticed the stage was split in two.…
Scholars have identified the works of several artists who showed a blend of both the Native American culture and that of Euro-American cultures in their paintings and drawings. For example, in the Shawnee War Dance by Ernest Spybuck 1833-1949, Spybuck shows the dance being performed for an Indian and a non-Indian audience. Spybuck has also embraced a Euro-American style of painting (Judith, 2008). The defined figures and flattened pictorial spaces of the earlier ledger drawings are no longer used as are swapped by sculptural figures and an illusionistic rendering of space similar to the work of 19th century artists such as George Catlin who frequently painted Native Americans. For Native Americans, narrative genre paintings were insignificant way of self-definition.…
They demonstrate each struggle by having it expressed throughout their performances in sections. Their performance consists of regular beats and at a normal tempo while staying in middle and low level being locomotor. As the performance begins, they are sitting in chairs in center stage one towards stage right and left. While the two dancers are at a low level, sitting down in the chairs, the other dancer is facing towards the audience downstage. The dancer sitting towards stage right has headphones on while dancing to the beat of the song moving her upper body right and back to left swaying her upper torso.…
Being able to choreograph and perform in dance concert is a very unique and amazing experience. Creating ideas with everyone around you and transforming those ideas into a masterpiece is a process like no other. With everyone’s opinions out in thin air, you can put all of your ideas into one to create something so beautiful. In Modern especially it was really intriguing to watch the whole process of how the dance was created. Since we did originally have a combo to go off of, it was different watching all the different groups create a combo over the steps but just in a different format.…
The Migrating Motion dance concert was extraordinary to watch in terms of analyzing the movements and positions that these dancers utilized throughout their performances. Everything was perfectly choreographed and corresponded with the appropriate song. For example, whenever there was a heartbeat tune, the dancers would motion their bodies to be in perfect sync with the sound. Additionally, with respect to the heart beat tune, the lighting was dim except for the dancers in the middle of the room. The only problem I had with this scene was the lighting.…
The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
