If Alice told Amy that we are all splendid and amazing it might have helped Amy realize that even though her and Robert were different and had different customs and manners, she shouldn’t try to change her or her family to impress him and they are already amazing. In the last paragraph on page one and the first paragraph on page two Amy Tan says “What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas? What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners? What terrible disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food?” Alice would have told Amy that even though her family and food is different then Robert’s, she shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Robert might have ended up liking Chinese manners and traditions better than his own.“...Only because it pleases you” (Walker lines 76 and 77). This quote would’ve definitely helped Amy. This would show Amy that if Robert didn’t like her culture or her customs it doesn’t matter, as long as she is happy. If she isn’t happy with it then she can change if she wants but it should be to please herself, not anybody else. Walker also might have told Tan to enjoy herself and have fun. If Amy was having fun and was relaxed then Robert might have been less tense and would have enjoyed himself more with thinking that

He seems to try to cover this up when he and his wife are interrupted by someone knocking at the door and he writes “I’d heard all I wanted to” (735), when in reality he is hiding his anxiety about what Robert could have said. After this, when the wife has him sit down to listen to her story, one that did not include him, and he writes that she shared with him “more detail than he cared to know” (736) admitting quite plainly and honestly that he cares only about matters directly connected to him. This is again evident with the way he refers to his wife as only “my wife” through the whole story. By not giving her a name, he takes possession of her in a way, to prove that she is only significant in relation to him.…
