Various English Amy Tan is the author of “Mother Tongue” essay. Her essay provides real life stories about her mother and herself struggling in America. Her story is an amazing eye opener because it makes people realize that someone who cannot speak standard English is less intelligent, but after reading “Mother Tongue” this person will change his/her opinion about people who cannot speak English. In her essay, Tan explain about her mother’s broken tongue, she discusses how challenging it was for her to be raised with a parent who speaks “limited” English, and she shows a relationship between them due to their communication. She says, “To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It’s my mother tongue” (419). Whatever her mother tongue is, she accepts her as who she is. For Tan, her mother’s tongue is understandable, and later on she figured out that there is nothing to be ashamed of. As an adult Tan claims, “My mother’s English, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, full of observation and imagery” (419). However, during her childhood their relationship weakens because at that particular period she was ashamed of her mother’s English. Therefore, she explains how she used to sit with a red-face in front of people and be sorry for her mother’s language. Moreover, the author explains to people that her mom’s language had bothered her that she cannot think of any other way to describe it as only “broken”. Tan describes that with what she learned at school, all past perfect tenses, conditional phrases, and all the other forms of standard English, she did not use it at home with her mom. This essay shows a touching and truthful story of acceptance and appreciation between mother and daughter. The native language that they use with each other is beautiful itself because it conveys love and care. Although, those of us who read her essay can see that the author warns us to accurately choose what language we have to use in order to avoid miscommunication with others, and be prepared to face any circumstances. All of us have our own native communication with closest people, and this communication makes our relationship even closer to our family because we feel safety and comfort as Tan and her mother felt to each other. Whatever our culture, legacy, and mother tongue are, we should appreciate it and be respectful because there is nothing to be ashamed
