In popular movies and shows the leading man is level headed and very straight, being able to seduce women with ease. Yet any man who is emotional is depicted as weak, or often of a different sexual orientation. Such in the 1985 movie Clue, Mr. Green is introduced as a timid and hapless homosexual, but in the third and “true” ending of the movie, he turns out to be a calm and collected FBI agent who is married to a woman. A harmful idea for present and future Dads. with nothing but negative stereotypes, they basically have to learn how to be parents on their own.
It’s not just in television where Dad’s are clueless. The baby brand Huggies once aired a commercial where they claimed their product could handle the toughest test imaginable: dads, alone with their babies, in one house, for five days. One dad in Pennsylvania saw it as nothing more than prejudice and negative stereotyping. This father, Chris Routly started a petition on change.org titled “We’re Dads, Huggies. Not Dummies.” which quickly reached over a thousand signatures. Huggies promptly removed the ad and promised to replace it with one which depicted caring and competent fathers. There is a line to be drawn with movies, television, and advertisements. And hopefully the rest of the media can follow Huggies example by changing how they portray men, and provide their audience with realistic examples of what a man could be, instead of what a man should be. Men who aren’t afraid to be afraid, who can have a good job and still be a loving father, and maybe know how to change a
