Analysis of “A Modest Proposal
“A Modest Proposal", Jonathan swift, takes advantage of the overlooked pamphlets, and also constructs a ridiculous proposal. He illustrates how backwards the state of Ireland is and the social classes. Swift proposes that the babies of all the poor parents that cannot provide for their child will need to contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many to help improve Ireland’s economy and standard living conditions. Swift states this because many woman are having children that they cannot provide for and his proposal would be "fair, cheap easy method of making these children sound useful"(3). Also, Swift employs words that further emphasize the fact that the "babies" that are to be eaten and used for clothing and more of a delicacy in that they are worth "10 shillings”. Swift states that it would cost two shillings to raise a baby until it is "one year of age" , he also later states that a child who is twelve would cost their parents about twelve shillings to rear them . Swift uses several terms and phrases that dehumanize humans and also compare humans to animals. He says “a child dropped from its dam” (15) to dehumanize woman and compare women to animal in how they give birth to many children, presumably that animals tend to have numerous young. Swift uses the word “breeder” to make woman seem as their only purpose in life is to produce children and in turn sell them to the market as a “delicacy”.
Swift uses juxtaposition by stating reasonable statements that most readers would agree with "whoever could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these children sound, useful members of the commonwealth would deserve so well of the public as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation" (3) and then he juxtaposes the idea that the children should be used as food. Swift also includes sarcasm and satire because he his proposal ,which features ideas for solving the poverty issue that are not to be taken seriously, following
