Analysis: Why Women Should Be Allowed To Participate In Close Combat

Improved Essays
Imagine going through an intense battle simulation where you have to carry 100 pounds of ammunition and equipment, participate in gunfights with live ammunition, and work with the rest of a unit to overcome obstacles. This is what many female marines are doing to be given the permission to participate in close combat roles, which are, at the moment, exclusive to men. The Pentagon ordered all branches of the military to integrate their combat units by the end of the year or explain why women can’t participate in close combat. The decision will be based on the results of this training women will go through. Although female soldiers are going through this training to give permission to all women, I don’t believe it is necessary and that women should participate in close combat. …show more content…
The women participating in the training themselves said they don’t want to participate in close combat. Those that are going through this harsh training don’t want to be part of it but are doing it for those that want to. Since most women don’t want to participate in close combat roles, it isn’t necessary to waste time and money to train them and allow them to participate if they aren’t going to. Another reason women shouldn’t be allowed to participate in close combat is that they are less physically capable. On average, women weigh at least 30 pounds less than men and they are much smaller. Although their strength, height, and weight are less than men, their performance is expected to be equal to men. It takes a lot of effort to try to carry 100 pounds of equipment and still be at the same pace as men, and not many women can accomplish that. For this reason, women shouldn’t be allowed to participate in close combat

The author, Lauren F. Serrano, believes women should not serve in the U.S Infantry. Serrano’s article, “Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S. Infantry”, provides arguments supporting her main points. The main points Serrano includes; why the U.S. is not in need for women on the frontlines, the infantry brotherhood, and sexual assault cases. Serrano served as a Marine Officer and contributes her personal experiences from her service. Although Serrano agrees women are capable to serve in the military, she stresses the infantry is not the main job females should focus on.…

“US military commanders repeatedly used women to go into battle spaces where men could not go” (Malrine par. 39). It’s understandable going into the situation thinking that you’re going to be all fist fight and one on one fighting, but when I think of the military no I think of guns and long range tactics to further protect our soldiers. I’m not sure many men would agree that men and women think alike, ladies, think back to the last time a guy said something that just made you mad but they didn’t seem to understand why you were mad. Imagine getting information from other countries. Women know how to talk to women.…

McGregor also adds that beyond helping with that issue having women in different parts of the military will being diversity into the military. I agree with this statement because in today’s world we like to follow the saying, “Out with the old and in with the new.” As you can see the author, Jenna McGregor, has good facts to go along her topic but not always good explanation. After reading and analyzing her writing I can see that there are problems with the way women are being treated in the military, but with people taking control this is slowly coming to an end. After reading this essay I think we can all agree to this statement by Greg Jacob, “women in the military are being held back simply because they are…

Ladies merit more regard. For a long while now, ladies have been taking part in the military, which, obviously, initially just permitted men. During the time of their interest, ladies have shown that they are pretty much as able as their male partners. A year ago was an especially critical year for female troopers as they were at long last permitted to move into legions that were in the past all male. Jena McGregor, an author for the Washington Post, kept in touch with her considerations on this chronicled accomplishment for ladies in her piece "Military Women in Combat: Why making it Official Matters.…

The women who argue to be able to serve in combat are not acknowledging the danger it puts themselves and the United States Military in. In the article,“Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S Infantry.”, Serrano expresses that if they allowed women to serve in combat during her service in the military, anyone including herself would have jumped at the opportunity because of the novelty, excitement, and challenge; but, her views have changed with the experience and knowledge she has gained. Everyone needs to accept the fact that women are different, not only physically, but all around. It will only destroy the mission of the services (Para. 1). Also, allowing women to serve in infantry will cause enormous amounts of distractions.…

When it comes to war, there seems to be the same subject that always comes up. The women’s role and where do they belong. Men have traditionally always been the ones who fought in the wars while the women were excluded. Being seen as the weaker sex would make war tougher for the men to fight, since they would have to look out for the women who are weaker by nature. While some women may be as tough as men there are still factors that can be distracting.…

Women in combat. It has recently sparked a debate on whether women should be allowed in combat or not. In my opinion, women shouldn’t be allowed in combat because they are too emotional to handle the long periods of time of being on tour, they aren’t physically built like men, and there would be too many problems with having men and women living together. Women are way too emotional to withstand being in combat. They wouldn’t be able to handle the 100+ degree temperatures, the stress of being away from their families for long periods of time, and they wouldn’t be able to handle being shot at all the time.…

“ Women are qualified for war. They would just have to work that much harder to be able to meet that goal. They would have to carry 100 pounds on their backs and would have to be able to go across the landscape with all this gair and are known to most likely not make it. Women are often great shooters but cant carry 50-80 pounds on them and is much harder on women to carry this amount of weight even with men carry more weight” (Westernjournalism) No girl can just go to war and expect to be able to do everything the boys can do.…

In the passage “Policy: Women in combat” the author talks about reasons why women can not and should not be in combat positions. However, in the lines of these two things seemed to be blurred rather than concrete. The passage gave an example of articles that emphasize this belief. They gave the article that former senator of virginia wrote which was a clear outline of common reasons as to why women should not be in combat. Some of the reasons he listed is as follows: that the fact women can get pregnant is seen as a weakness, that physically and emotionally they are not strong enough, and finally that they would distract the soldiers from the task at hand.…

Equal opportunity may not result in equal outcome In light of Secretary of Defense Aston Carter’s recent announcement that all combat military occupational specialties will open to women, I feel compelled to speak on this controversial subject. In this paper I will talk about both sides of the argument including factors of the effects of gender integration in combat units and provide reasons that justify predictions that people have made. This certain topic affects me because I have a brother that has given four years of service and has five more years of service to give after becoming an officer for the Marines. My brother Thomas served as infantry member and if they rule that women may serve it will affect him in his military career in the…

Should Women be allowed in Combat? Woman should be allowed in combat for many reasons. First of all allowing woman into combat situations would make our military more effective by putting talent into sections that were frowned upon before, it would help our forces become more modernized, putting women into combat situations would not break tradition because women have served in every war since the revolutionary war, and would put ability above gender. Allowing woman into combat situations would allow our combat units to be more effective in many different ways. Women who choose to become active combat soldiers, are unlikely to shirk their duty by becoming pregnant after a call-up as these women have willingly joined the service…
