Blood, sweat, and tears; competitively, these collegiate athletes give and leave it all in their various domains of athleticism, for our enjoyment and in many cases the prosperity of their respective Alma-marters. But, now the question arises, to pay or not to pay? That is the question. These student athletes just about put in the same amount of time as the professionals. They seemingly put forth the same effort if not more. And the definitely share the same risk as their professional counterparts. All while their individual schools capitalize off their sweat. So in defense of the players I will be discussing why they should get paid.
Universities are making money off of their college athletes.

But, they did ruled in the favor of the students being allowed to receive monthly stipends. The Ninth Circuit decision drew "a sharp line between making sure students don't pay out of pocket, and colleges putting money in their pockets," said Joel G. Chefitz, partner at McDermott Will & Emery (Phillips, G., 2015). But with that said, many current and former student athletes feel as if that’s not enough. In an interview with the St. Paul Pioneer Press (Minnesota) several professional football players of the Minnesota Vikings spoke on their stance of this subject. Wide receiver Joe Webb (Alabama-Birmingham): “should college players be paid? Yeah, I think so. They’re doing great things for the university. I mean, the university is making money off the college player. Why not let the college player get a little change?” Defensive tackle Fred Evans (Texas State): "I do feel as though they deserve compensation, seeing as how everybody else gets compensated for their talents. But the discrepancy comes with other college sports -- lacrosse, track, basketball, swimming. I honestly don't think they'll ever find a way to make everybody happy. And how can you say people at USC should be paid more than somebody at Boise State? With football, you don't have time to do extracurricular activities and get jobs. …show more content…
That’s right paid employees! Now how is this achieved? Unionization, the student athletes should get together with the help of some professional representation, and unionize. Not to keep beating a dead horse, but the issue here is still how in this billion dollar, the work horses [so to speak], and faces of this industry don’t receive even a crumb of the pie, so to fix things, Unionizing is the key. As for developing a pay system to pay the athletes, many people like to argue that no system could compensate college athletes fairly. That’s nothing more than an excuse to detract from the issue at hand. If every system had to either be perfect or not exist at all, well… we wouldn’t have many systems. The same pay system that is used in any other big business would work in this case, too. Players could be paid based on productivity. The more value the athlete brings, the more he is paid (Siebold, S., 2015). Now, of course should the decision ever be made to pay these student athletes, some additional things would need to be put in place, primarily, I feel that some form of financial planning would need to be put in place. This way, the athletes wouldn’t misappropriate their
