Why is Humor the Best Coping Strategy for Stress?

One might ask why is humor the best coping strategy for stress? In a vast majority of people's’ perspectives, they believe laughter is the best medicine because it creates a sense of relief as well as reducing muscle tension. For these and many other reasons, humor is the best coping strategy for stress (“Managing Conflicts with Humor”).

One of the main reasons why humor should be the best coping strategy to relieve stress is one’s well being. Humor is very significant to your emotional and physical health in the long run. The last equally and main reason why humor should be the best coping strategy for stress is one’s social life. Humor helps your social life by creating a sense of intimacy and connection between two people (Managing Conflicts with Humor). In other words, if you are stressing out over talking to someone or in front of a big crowd, try thinking of something humorous and you will do fine. An example to support this pro argument is a quote from the author Jeanne Segal. It states “Laughter relieves stress, elevates mood, enhances creativity in one’s social life, and makes you more resilient” (Segal). In addition, there are two tips that one might use to relieve stress in their social life. These tips are to tap into your playful side and to develop a sense of humor (Managing Conflicts with Humor). By not developing a sense of humor, one is more likely to have stress because they will feel left out on a joke or they will feel everyone is looking at them in result of them not laughing. An example in this situation would be a psychologist. They are professionals who evaluate and studies mental processes and behavior. Having a psychologist evaluate you for stress is just like taking away our freedom because they are speaking from their point of view and will most likely not listen to everything you have to say. Humor should be the way to go when dealing with stress because it is inexpensive as well as enjoyable. If you were to go to a psychologist, they would probably tell you less desirable ways to deal with stress but it would cost you more than one session to get the results you want. However, with humor, you can almost find humor anywhere from the television to a family member (Association for Psychological Science RSS).

In conclusion, these are the three equally and main reasons for why humor is the best coping strategy for relieving stress. After reading an essay such as this one, one might ask themselves “Would psychology really do a better job at relieving stress than humor?” I guarantee that your answer would be no for every body paragraph you read.
